The teacher alone cannot provide all the needed conditions for an effective teaching and learning process, other supporting materials should be provided.

The child as a learner, learns better when most of the sense are appealed to. The introduction and use of instructional materials provides much needed sensory experiences needed by the learner for an effective and meaningful behavioural change.

Instructional materials are essential supplement to teaching which represents a body of needed teaching and learning information. They reduce the workload of the teacher in the classroom, reinforce and add clarity to learning.

The instructional materials range from locally made materials to manufactured and scientific devices which appeal to the senses. All instructional materials should assist the pupils learning and not to be used as means of mere entertainment.

FACTORS GUIDING THE USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: The use of instructional materials should be guided by many factors. Some of the factors include;

  • The instructional materials should be carefully selected and screened. A teacher should carefully select the materials to make sure that they are appropriate to the level of the pupils being taught and that they present desired information in an interesting and stimulating manner. For example, it will be of no use exposing the child in the lower elementary 1 class to the use of radio discussion in English in teaching and techniques of hockey game. The children at this level have not fully developed the intellectual capacity for such use of radio talks and this makes the use of this instructional materials ineffective.

  • Proper conditions of the instructional materials: The teacher should check all the instructional materials for use in order to make sure they are in good working conditions. It will be of no use and effective educational value using already worn out or damaged materials. Such damaged materials may even act as health hazards to the learners.

  • Instructional materials should be varied: What do I mean by this? In a theory of practical lesson, the teacher should attempt to present different types of Instructional materials in order to stimulate the varying interests of the pupils.

  • Instructional materials should be selected with due regards I would for local background: This is necessary so as to provide the learning with materials he can associate with. For example, it may look uninteresting to the Nigerian child if he is made to watch a video recording of a foreign dance group when learning Nigerian dances.

  • The Instructional materials should be effectively displayed: The Instructional materials should be displayed in such a location that every child will hear or see and learn from it conveniently. For example, if a wall chart is being used, it should be coveniently placed for every child to benefit from it.

  • Instructional materials should be planned and integrated into the lesson: The learners should be properly introduced to and briefed on the materials being used so that they may know what to expect and understand the relationship of the Instructional materials to the unit of study.
