The Marva Collins Approach

avatar

In 1975, Marva Collins started a school called Westside Preparatory School at Chicogo.

She was able to make a positive impact in the students that she taught and raised the confidence for learning in her students.

Positive reinforcement through words from the start of the day was one of her methods that had impressed me. She felt that positive words were as important as the curriculum.

We can imagine that it was back in 1975 that she was implementing a theory that many teachers these days were trained when we were in the teaching institute.

Very often, there are teachers who used sarcastic words whenever they correct their students but all these are mainly negative words that hurt their pride.

The love and joy of learning can be nurtured through positive words and teachers should be generous in giving these words.

Before we can nurture self-directed learners, they must first believe that they can and their failures are good process of future success.
