Visual aids are real things or objects or pictures of real things (or objects) which are useful in imparting knowledge. These aids promotes understanding and serve as teaching tools. Studies have shown that through the use of visual aids, pupils can learn up to 35 percent more and remember up to 55 percent longer than normal. Therefore, visual aids are good teaching learning tools.

This unit will expose you to a variety of visual aids, their uses and how you can improvise some of them.

OBJECTIVES
After studying this unit, you should be able to:

  1. Mention at least five visual aids;
  2. State the uses of visual aids;
  3. Outline the guidelines for selection, planning and presentation of visual aids;
  4. Improvise some visual for your classroom use.

TYPES OF VISUAL AIDS
Visual aids related to the teaching of health and many common. Some of these aids include the following:

  1. (BULLETIN) BOARDS: these are either fixed to the wall or made in a portable form. They should be filled with information pertaining to health topics taught. Items should be changed frequently to keep the information current. A healthy information bulletin is a solid teaching advice.

2 CHALK BOARDS: this is the oldest material for demonstration. It is convenient, straightforward, and simple. There are many reasons for using a chalk board:
(a). The idea in mind can be written down.
(b). Thinking becomes organized
(c). Words are better understood
(d). It helps the group to understand the details more easily
(e). It concentrates the learner's attention
(f). Lesson summary could be written out

RULES FOR USING CHALK BOARDS
(a). It should not be overcrowded
(b). The material should be simple
(c). It's use should be planned ahead with the presentation of lesson
(d). All headings should be printed and underlined
(e). At the end of the lesson the chalk board should present a good picture of the summary of the lesson.
