Penguin Bloom-the magpie who saved a family.

There is a new Australian movie about one of my favorite Feathered Friends? A magpie. How could I not watch this one!

It is the true story of a woman whose life seems shattered after a horrible accident that happened while on holiday in Thailand in 2013. The film stars Naomi Watts as Sam, and Andrew Lincoln as Cameron. They are the parents of 3 rambunctious young boys. It is the story of the events the family faced in the aftermath of the tragedy that left Sam with a fractured skull, ruptured lungs, and a shattered spine. The family struggles to adjust to their new normal while mom struggles to adjust to life with a quad injury and they are all helped in their recovery by an injured baby magpie that they rescued and named Penguin.

For me, the magpies steal the show! Eight different birds, all trained by Paul Mander, played the role of Penguin. He has been training birds for more than 20 years. Magpies are very intelligent and have good memory retention. Some of the birds had been rehabilitated due to injuries and are unable to be released back into the wild. Magpies are curious and respond well to signals when they know they will be rewarded with mealworms. My favorite scenes are when the bird steals the teabag from the cup of tea, bops down the hall, and also when it knocks over a set of vases. She leaves poop wherever she goes. Adorable and annoying to have in the house!

Cameron Bloom is a professional photographer whose Instagram account @penguinthemagpie has many beautiful images. He wrote a bestselling book entitled Penguin Bloom. Netflix released the movie in January 2021

This feel good film is filled with courage and hope and the story of Penguin The Magpie,: The Odd Little Bird Who Saved A Family

Looks like I haven't heard about this film. The plot seems good enough! I like Naomi Watts too.

It would have seemed a bit sappy for me, except for the fact that it is a true story. They even filmed it in the family's home.

That sounds interesting to watch. Magpies are very clever, but still it must be very challenging to train birds for film.

I read that they often got something different on camera than what they had set out to shoot and that sometimes they just kept the cameras rolling knowing that some magical footage could happen if they were patient. I'm sure the birds must have been unpredictable actors.

Just remember a commercial of Ikea, where 200 house cats were left to roam in the store and cameras were just rolling. After that they made a fantastic compilation and very sweet advert.

I really like Naomi Watts and you made me a good suggestion with what to look for on Netflix. This is how I consider this community useful, the posts here. We get suggestions for movies, movies we don't know about and which are definitely worth seeing. Thank you!

I agree wholeheartedly. There's so much trash on tv nowadays. This is an excellent way to find interesting movies to watch as well as find others here on Hive who share similar film interests @bluemoon

I agree! I love seeing more new posts being written and learning about a film to add to my 'to be watched list. The community has many more film related features in the works.

I'm sure of that! I wonder how you manage to get involved in so many projects?

I just do what I love! I've spent much of the morning handling various issues over on Discord and making arrangements for an upcoming contest and keeping up with my comments has certainly suffered today!

Our 2nd Easter under Covid restrictions. It's so odd not to have all my family and friends gathered around the dining room table for a big dinner. My best friend came over and brought carryout and we had a picnic on the back porch, just me and her. It was the first time I had been with her all year, and it was our first warm day of the season and it was lovely to be outside. So it was a good Easter. How was yours?

The movie was a good one. I hope you have an opportunity to see it.

I am very sorry that you are away from your children, it is a real shame

Here the same, we spend as a family taking care of this condition, here we are living with five different strains of the virus, the situation is out of control.

I take this opportunity to wish you a happy start to the week

I love true stories, yesterday I've seen a french movie on the life and the work of the Facteur Cheval..Do you know him ? If you were in France in the Drome departement, you probably visited his "palais idéal",
if not, here is a link to discover it : http://www.facteurcheval.com/en/history/palace.html this is just incredible story, the work of an entire life of a very simple man in the end of 19th century....🙃

I was never there and did not know about him. I have looked but can only find the movie in French. It looks beautiful and I may end up watching it and hoping I can understand enough. 🙂

Yes french movies usually stay just french movies, and very confidential btw 😄 but you can admire the "palais ideal" on the site 😉 The movie is not such a great one, but its beautiful interest lies in the fact that it is a true and amazing story (and also Jacques Gamblin is a wonderful actor )

Superb movie! I saw it some time ago. The postman who built a palace somewhat in the style of Gaudi. I remember it was also a love story ...
I really love old French movies. Not much on new movies, since the population has become so heterogeneous in France.

Yes you are right @bluemoon ! a love story between the postman and his daughter, he built the palace for her 😊 I suppose the movie was sub-titled in your language ..?

Of course, it was subtitled in Romanian. I saw the movie on TV. Fortunately, even in communist Romania in the last century, the films were subtitled and not dubbed. This helped us adjust to foreign languages and, at the same time, we were able to listen to the real voices of so many great actors.

I love magpie. She is beautiful, intelligent and very careful. A magpie family lives in our yard. But they have not been seen lately. Perhaps busy with their nest.
