Food Sharing #216 - By Pass Seafood @ Phuket, Thailand

Hi Everyone,

We love going to Thailand as previously mentioned in my travel blog because not only its cheap spending locally, have direct flights from Sydney but the flight costs are also very attractive. Jetstar which is a budget airline from the Qantas group always have great deals flying to different destinations but everything you use or eat needs to be paid. Airline food is normally pretty crappy so we normally don’t order a meal there and just get a few snacks to last the flight considering the flight time is not that long. So every time we land, the first thing to do is to find something to eat. This time we stopped By Pass Seafood for our first meal. I remember clearly this place as our flight was delayed I was super hungry, just drove to this place as it was on the way to our accommodation and didn’t even look online to see if they have any good reviews because we were way too hungry.

They literally just opened up for business so we were the only customers at that time. They gave us a menu with both Thai and English plus pictures for easy ordering. The staff there actually knows basic English as I am guessing they get many tourists on the way to their accommodation. Lots of food to choose from so we ordered some coconuts and lemon iced tea for drinks, some large pipis, a morning glory (vegetable dish), pineapple fried rice, prawn rings and my favourite kung chae nampla which is a raw prawn dish with lots of fish sauce and garlic.

Food came quickly and like we suspected from the photos and price, the servings were huge which we prefer so we can try a few more things. The morning glory was slightly spicy which I can take with lots of fish sauce. Pipis were big and fresh with no sand at all which was nice. We find the pipis in Sydney if they don’t pump enough water through sand still gets caught within the shell fish so this one was done nicely. The pineapple fried rice wasn’t surprising but we were craving for some carbs so it fitted nicely. The fried prawn ring was my least favourite, I prefer seafood as is if I am in Asia and I am not a huge fan of fried food. Lastly, the Kung chae nampla was what I was anticipating. The prawns were very fresh combined with the fish sauce, bitter melon and garlic it was divine. Not everyone likes raw seafood but if you don’t mind it, you really need to order this dish in Thailand.

Wonderful setting as it wasn’t too close to the city so it wasn’t too noisy or dusty like some place we have been to in Thailand. Staff was pleasant with parking right outside the restaurant. Pricing was wise above average compared to other places in Thailand but for Australian standard it was cheap but you do get cheaper meals for same quality in town.
