6 General Skills I want to work on to be more Awesome

Unlike some people, I don’t make a concerted effort to constantly improve. I do it naturally. I have certain things I want to accomplish, and I know these things are possible, so I always ask myself what it will take to achieve them. Sometimes the answer is something I don’t want to hear.

At first learning something that “I didn’t like” really bothered me. I felt annoyed that I needed this skill to achieve anything. “I wouldn’t need to learn marketing if people weren’t constantly lied to and if their attention wasn’t constantly being bombarded against their will”. True, but that’ how it is. I used to hate that that’s how it was, until I realized that pushing myself to learn this skill could help me develop some parts of my personality that I never thought I’d develop, or sometimes parts of my personality that I could never predict. I fashion myself a rather empathetic person, but what if something like marketing could help me become even more empathetic?

And so now I try to focus on what good can come from learning any skill, even the ones that sometimes feel out-of-character or superficial. I realize that nothing is wasted and anything that gives me a fuller understanding of this world is worth doing.

When I look back, I’ve grown so astoundingly in the past 5 years. At the time, a lot of the growth felt unnecessary or redundant, some of it even painful, but I don’t regret any of it. The last 5 years have primarily been about learning to balance acceptance with a strong will. I don’t need to give up my dreams or desires, but I need to accept where I am at all times in order to avoid falling back into that victim mentality. I’ve also learned to have real confidence in what I’m doing because I feel I’m on the right path, and there is a profound peace of mind that comes with that, and also with all the experimentation I’ve done to gain experience.

Now that I’m out of the victim mentality, I find my ability to absorb skills and information is remarkably improved. I also feel a hell of a lot more motivation to work and less need for breaks and even if I’m making much more progress on my various projects these days, I still run into a few of the same old issues. With my newfound confidence and peace of mind, I know I can install the software that needs to be installed in order to perform better.

I also love how each skill that I try to tackle allows me to learn other skills that I didn’t even realize were related, like how writing every day has helped me become more aware of my thoughts every day. I was only trying to become a better writer, but now I feel like a better thinker.

Here are some of the things that I’d like to improve or work on in the next…let’s 2-5 years.

1 Focus / Discipline / Inspiration

My fuel is inspiration. Rather than pushing myself, I like to find excitement and let that run things. Finding excitement is a skill though. Learning what songs and what people and what behaviors get me moving is the first step and channeling that excitement is the second. I’ve done a good job, but I’d like to get better.

2 Marketing

This has been the most painful for me to learn but I’m trying to redefine what the word means to fit my values and my desires. Right now I’m focused on targeting the people who can benefit the most from what I have to offer, but I’m also focused on trying to maintain my relationships better, not just for personal gain but because it’s awesome and what I want to see in the world.

I’ve also given up on getting more likes in order to reach more people and spread my work. I will just try to do bigger and better things in my interactions with people and hopefully that will lead to more attention online, especially with regards to sharing my novels and fiction.

3 Memory

There is so much to learn and I don’t want to half ass it. I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to learn things over and over again when I probably could have learned the first time, I just didn’t have to right tools to remember it. I have an awful short-term memory when it comes to names, dates, and information that I can’t directly apply. I’m going to try and create a habit of remembering names and birthdays for example, just to practice this. Hopefully it can help me become a better language learner and teacher.

4 Reading

Just as above, too much to learn, too much to explore. I want to enjoy a whole lot of it. I want to read a few books about history and anthropology as well as some cyberpunk and metaphysical fiction, and on and on, as well as everyones blogs….I’m also balancing my own writing fiction, blogging, vlogging, making music, practicing guitar, building a company, managing my freelance work, being social and playing video games, as well as all this self improvement.

5 Routine

This is another ultra weak point for me. I’ve been getting better at it, but not nearly as good as I hope to be. I’d like my routine to include exercising muscles that will help with posture, practicing a little guitar every day, learning some language every day, doing some promotion for my work, and also working on my novels every day. That’s a lot to balance, yeah?

6 Flow

Instead of learning public speaking, I want to learn verbal flow state. I want to be able to channel ideas at will. I don’t have to get them perfect or have perfect presentation, but I want to be able to deliver a coherent and powerful message that can impact people without much planning, or without any planning whatsoever. The ideas are overflowing; I just need to get better at speaking them on the spot. I hope this leads to better improvisation in music or maybe even…freestyle rapping….!?

You are on point.
The thing about learning is that it's not something that should be chased after with an aggressive approach.

You set a target for yourself and give yourself a good timeline for it. Something is already telling me that you will achieve this before the end of the timeline mapped out for it.

I'd concur with your statement about learning other relative skills while perfecting our writing skills. I also noticed that l have become more of a time manager after learning about writing.

What about your book?
I'd hope that you are wrapping that up nicely.

There is no end point for any of these skills, all of them can be continuously improved upon so I'm sure I'll see some results soon.

The first release is out already. Hivesters can read it for free but you gotta send me a discord message 😉

All this sounds so familiar, especially the discipline and getting a good routine for myself. I also am bad at remembering dates, names and/or numbers, but I do try to remember facts... For instance I forgot someone's name, but I remembered a specific fact of that person and I said it out loud, to let the person know that I did remember her.

Furthermore I will try out your advice regarding getting that discipline up, maybe it'll help me better get that "under my belt". And I know what you mean regarding learning new skills, when I was thrown into the Ocean to learn how to design flyers, etc. I didn't really see the need of it, but now that I know a few basic steps, I could easily use those "design" skills here for Hive or wherever whenever and that is always a plus. I need to remember that when trying out new things that I might have an "aversion" to.

Let's work toward personal growth! 💪

I'm focused on working out now....well I'm focused on a million things but I'm also focused on working out. My discipline is 5 minutes a day on the most important parts of my body. Sounds like nothing but 5 minutes usually becomes 15 or 30.

Let's be awesome 😃

Hahaha I know how that goes. Setting a minimum time, which easily goes way faster when you're actually into it and getting the hang of it.

I find that it is the challenge that really stimulates different parts of our brain and result in us learning more than we thought we would. There are so many skills to be learnt, finding the ones that will really benefit you and help you thrive is really such a great step and you seem to have accomplished that. You are right about how learning in itself opens up so many doors for us, keep working that brain I say.
