La planta de Trinitaria (Bougainvillea spectabilis) una planta medicinal o tóxica/The Trinitaria plant (Bougainvillea spectabilis): medicinal or poisonous plant
(Edited)
Good morning to the Hive community
A whatsapp group of retired people, about the use of the infusion of the flowers of Trinitaria (Bougainvillea spectabilis) to treat respiratory conditions such as those associated with Covid. The discussion was related to the apparent toxicity of this plant considered poisonous according to the opinion issued by a doctor, which cast doubt on the beneficial effects of this plant in people who already consumed it for coughs, bronchitis and flu.
I missed this information, because I was not aware of the toxicity of trinitaria, so to be on the safe side, I did a review on this aspect.
About the plant
The Trinitaria is a shrubby plant belonging to the family Nyctaginaceas, which is used as an ornamental for the beauty of its flowers and its beauty of its flowers and its climbing habit. The true flowers are very small but are protected by bracts of various colors: red, yellow, purple, white, pink, which are very striking, fulfilling its function of protecting the flower and attracting pollinating agents, mainly insects.
The family of these plants,
has not been characterized by the presence of toxic compounds such as alkaloids and phenolic compounds as occurs in other families such as Apocynaceae, Asclepiadaceae and Solanaceae.
Checking the internet I did not find any reference about the toxic effect of the extracts of flowers of this plant. On the contrary, there are references to the use of leaves, stem bark and flowers to treat different ailments and some studies on the effect of chemical compounds such as pinitol, betacyanine, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids.
There are reports of works where pinitol is mentioned, which is a compound related to the family of inositols, isolated from some plants and among these of Boungavillea, for its effect as an antidiabetic.
Here are some important considerations to keep in mind when using medicinal plants to avoid any confusion that may cause harm.
- Chemical compounds vary according to the plant organ that is being used.
- Generally there is a higher concentration of compounds of secondary metabolism in the leaves, because they are the laboratory of the plant, the center of production of the different compounds that are distributed to where they are required, some of them act as defense mechanisms such as tannins and alkaloids.
- In the flowers, as in the case of Boungavillea, where the bracts and flowers are used for the treatment of respiratory ailments, the predominant compounds are flavonoids and carotenes.
- It is recommended to use only the indicated organ.
- It is important to take into account how to make the curative preparation.
- There may be antagonistic effects between the compounds so you should follow the recommendations already tested and not combine plants without knowing them.
- It is necessary to know well the plant to which reference is made because some of them have the same common name and this must be the cause of the confusion in this case. The Nerium oleander plant is also called Trinitaria in some regions and it can have certain compounds that due to their concentration can be toxic. The latex it produces can cause irritation in dogs.
Natural medicine from plant compounds is a very important aid in the treatment of many diseases. Plants provide us with a great variety of compounds, many have already been synthesized as commercial medicines, but we have at our disposal what nature offers us, we just have to learn how to use them.

Have you used this plant personally? What is the relationship of this plant to your life or to your culture? Do you grow it? Do you have a recipe?
It's these kind of things I love to read about.

Saludos.
