Our Home Vegetable and Herbs Garden | Stay-at-Home Project

avatar

A year ago this month, my family started our very own small vegetable garden in our home. We did not have a front yard or a backyard. What we got is our second floor unfinished balcony. But first I will tell you what motivated us, specially to start to grow our our food.

Two of the many cinnamon basil plants in our garden. The vine-like plant is Bittermelon

Last year, March 16 to be exact, our country, Philippines, declared for an Enhanced Community Quarantine because of Covid19. People were instructed to stay at home. The same with the rest of the world. With this time staying at home, people in the country got interested in gardening. Our family was one of them.

Since we didn't have a lot of garden space, we turned our second floor balcony into a vegetable garden using recycled materials like cans and plastic water bottles as pots. We collected used cans and plastic bottles from our neighbors. This is in a way helping Mother Earth by recycling.

We started with few plants. The first vegetable that we planted was Choy Sum then eventually added more. Since then we had harvests like pechay, okra, mustard greens and more.

Okra. One of our past harvest.

Some of the plants in our garden were from the seeds of our kitchen scraps. Like this bitter melon. From the store bought bitter melon, we got the seeds and planted it in our own garden. I hope this will continue to grow big and be ready for harvest.

I don't know a lot of recipes that uses the herbs that I have in our garden but I am looking forward in posting food recipes with it. Or do you have a recipe to share? I will truly appreciate it.

I am glad that we were able to start this home garden and it has provided us food. Harvest may not be that much but in a way it made us self-reliant and self-sufficient. It also gives me a happy feeling watching the green view. I am amazed every time I see the plants . How wonderful nature is.

This is really lovely. The lockdown has brought creativity out of your family. Perhaps no one could have thought that the balcony can be utilized for such activity. If everyone can imbibe this kind of attitude, the world will not experience any food crises.

I love the ingenuity of your vegetable growing. I too have limited space.
Seeing your post with the beautiful plants growing and the food you have grown has really inspired me to take that leap of faith with using pots.

Fantastic post, thank you for sharing your food-growing journey.
😊💚🌸

I love adding herbs to salads, and to teas. I add parsley to a lot of cooking, or just eat raw straight from the plant - very good for iron!

I love how lockdown forced people to start gardens - one really good thing to come out of these times! And such creative ways too - love hte use of bottles! Great to see you can plant a garden even in a small space on your verandah.

Awesome post, thanks so much for sharing !

It was not really that hard. I found a video in youtube about how to grow lemon from seeds. I followed the instructions.. Waited for few days to for the seeds to have roots then transfered it to the soil.

not having a garden is not a reason to not plant anything! your post is a clear example of that! it is great that can sow in pots and get many food like you do, keep doing a good work!

Thank you so much! True! There are so many ways to grow plants even if we don't have a lawn. In our case we bought garden soil and placed it in pots.. We are grateful we able to do it.

This is so cool! Good work! Like yourselves, when COVID hit, I lost my job and was unsure how the situation would unfold. We live in a very rural area and there was talk of our grocery stores closing among other things. So, I also started a garden on my balcony.

I had a lot of failed experiments. Our balcony is on the first floor and critters such as chipmunks could still easily climb up and steal my seedlings. That's where a lot of things failed. I managed to grow some pretty good crops of cilantro as well as a fair amount of successful tomato plants. Some green beans and my lettuce was doing well until an unexpected frost killed it.

The nights are still cold where I am this year so I haven't started up my new garden yet. However, soon I will start planting seeds indoors and move them outside once the weather is looking a little better. I'm now following you for motivation! Your plants look great and you were certainly more successful than I was :)

Thank you for your visit. That is really a challenge when critters are around and also the weather is another challenge. Hope your plants will grow and flourish.

I am happy that our plants grew and has produce harvest. Planning to plant new seeds this week.
