Empty the cup and you can fill up/ Vacía la taza y podrás llenarte [ENG/ESP]

Apart from cultivating love and goodness, we should try to develop our intellectual capacity in every situation to reach a clear understanding of what is going on.

During last week's meditation session, continuing with the outline I have been working on, I shared the following story, which refers to being filled with opinions and understandings that may or may not be correct, and how being filled with these do not allow us to receive more from those who may know more than we do and leave us without a possibility of further growth.

Today's story is about a well-studied teacher who goes in search of wisdom.

The professor arrived at the home of a Zen master and introduced himself by flaunting all the titles he had achieved in his long years of study. Afterwards, the professor commented on the reason for his visit, which was none other than to know the secrets of Zen wisdom.

The character was an accumulator of knowledge and his interest was not really in personal realization but in the growth of his ego.

Instead of giving him explanations, the master invited him to sit down and served him a cup of tea. He served and served more and more tea. When the cup overflowed, the sage, apparently distracted, kept pouring the tea so that the liquid spilled over the table, without ceasing.

The professor could not help noticing what was happening, and already in despair, he cried out impatiently:

What are you doing?! You don't realize that the cup is full, there is no more room for tea," he warned.

The teacher put the teapot aside to affirm:

You are like this cup, you came full of opinions and prejudices. Unless your cup is empty, you cannot learn anything.

This Buddhist story teaches us that with a mind full of prejudices it is impossible to learn and take into consideration new knowledge. We must "empty ourselves" of old precepts and be open to new teachings.

So much incredible learning in cups and tea. 😍 Beautiful learnings. Takes the whole tea ceremony idea from a mere cultural idea into sacred medicine & healing.
