For regular crypto users, investors and traders. Android or Apple ?

I generally avoid Apple products as I simply don't like using macOS and iOS. Many may write this off as a windows usage bias but this really isn't the case. Back in the late '80s and '90s on my desk at work was a Mac (as well as 'terminals' linked to Mainframes running UNIX and COBOL and the first 'PC' (when PC really meant it was an IBM PC clone and not Personal Computer) I used ran DOS and later OS/2 and so Windows came relatively late in my computer life.

In recent years, I used a 2009 MacBook Pro as a Windows platform due it to being a rock-solid lump of unbreakable aluminium and, apart from the weight, a perfect travel companion. It was finally retired a couple of years ago.

On the phone front, my first smartphones were Sony; firstly the P800 and P910 which ran Symbian before finally getting to Android not long after its release and there I've stayed ever since!

It's true. I've never owned an Apple phone nor an iPod or iPad but as I approach new phone time, I will again take another long hard look at iPhones. This time though, instead of just point blank refusing to buy one on price objections, I will try to take a more pragmatic approach to my choice!

Another reason is that coins.co.th who are a brilliant crypto-fiat portal in Thailand and The Philippines only have an iOS App here in Thailand with no plans for an Android version. Their site works well on mobile, but still; I do like my Apps!

The question is, as crypto users, what do you prefer? I'd imagine your choice is App led and so along with your choice, I'd be grateful if you'd also recommend your favourite Apps for either/both platforms so I can take a look before I simply go out and buy a new Mi Droid.

  • iOS

  • Android

If you want security and a bit of privacy... iOS.
If you want the freedom to sideload apps — and expose yourself to malware — Android.

There’s more crypto apps on Android than on iOS. Many of those sideloaded apps which are in “beta” they don’t want to submit to the play store yet.

I don’t install many crypto apps. Security is a HUGE thing for me, even more so when it comes to wallets. Any app which matters, and can be considered safe slash “trusted”, is present on both platforms.

Thanks for that overview. I generally don't sideload Apps and definitely not anything related to crypto!
Coins .co.th told me they didn't have enough market in Thailand to build a specific Android App although they do have fully featured Android and iOS in Phil's where their main market is.

I will look for Apps that have both formats available as a rule of thumb then.

Thanks again. Hope your health is improving :-)

So as an addendum: you know I'm pro-iOS. But I do have an Android smartphone (Xiaomi Mi9) and while I have some issues with its attempts to phone home to Google, I will not replace it for the iPhone 12 (Mini). Would love to but my phone is solid, still super fast and Android isn't that bad. Besides, I don't want an iPhone with lightning connector, I've spent enough on replacing those all the time. I will wait until USB-C in iPhone 13.

Weird the Coins.ph app isn't built as an API. It should then be rather trivial to replace the services with local ones, altho it could also be that IRS integration may complicate those things. What with being fully legal (and maximally regulated), right.

Yeah, they have close those 20 million accounts here. I think in Thailand it was 2m after legal launch, but a majority of those are probably not active nor KYC'ed.

Sadly enough can't ask, most of my contacts there left or are counting down the days until shares vest after the acquisition by GoJek.

Thanks once more. I have been using the wife's Mi9 and I love it after she just got a Mi10T pro which is what I will probably also go for.

I didn't know Coins were being bought by GoJek. It's a shame, Coins is simple and reliable and their customer support is almost instant. GoJek are advertising and promoting everywhere at the moment as a new entrant into the delivery space. I didn't realise they also ran a payment portal but I can't help thinking they missed the boat by 18 months.

Anyway. That's that sorted! Thanks again and I will leave you in peace for the time being ;-)

I hadn't looked at the new MI flagship this year because my Mi9 is still super fast, but the Mi10T looks great with that screen refresh rate.

While a compelling upgrade given the prices 2nd hand Mi9s command, it's too big for me. I want a smaller phone again. :3

GoJek are the area's online mega conglomerate. They will tap in every active niche. They have a massive war chest to compete. Expect more acquisitions from them, especially in bike sharing niche and the likes. Slightly less popular but growing niches.
