Ask Solo anything - AMA

avatar
(Edited)

Qua (@hiveqa) has given me the opportunity to do another AMA. Back in 2019 I was interviewed by @wesphilbin but alot of changed since then. So lots to talk about and ask me about in 2021. Ive stayed busy and with all new projects I would love to have some questions asked about me and what I do.

Leave a comment in this post if you have any questions you would like me to answer.

Link to my previous AMA with @wesphilbin

https://steempeak.com/community/@steembasicincome/interview-with-solominer

If you are unsure of what an AMA actually is, it stands for Ask Me Anything. AMA is an abbreviation for “ask me anything.” It's used by people who are opening themselves up to any kind of question—especially personal questions.

Source: Howtogeek.com

Here are a few topics I would happily answer, really not much is off limits.. Dont ask me how many BTC I hodl, thats rude... So its really an ask me "almost" anything.

Bees (Mason and Honey bees)
Gardening
Infrared and Ultraviolet Photography
Martial arts (Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu is mostly what I know about)
Life in Georgia
Mining crypto
Hive or other cryptos
Splinterlands
Health and Diet and taking good care of your body
Downvoting and fighting abuse on Hive
My haunted home I live in
Racing cars
Offroading
Hunting and fishing
Camping
Hanging out in the discords

and lastly, the most important question of them all

Do I like Justin Sun or do I just want to fuck him?

Happy to talk about just about anything, so just ask!

@themarkymark did an interview with @hiveqa before me, heres a link below to it. Lots of good questions in there answered.

https://peakd.com/hive-117800/@themarkymark/ask-me-anything-marky-edition-qmspy1

Looking forward to the questions!

What tokens on Hive Engine do you plan on putting more Hive on? There's a lot of promising tokens being created, interested if you are looking into HE tokens too.

I really like Splinterlands, so I bought a few Alpha, Beta and Untamed booster packs to hodl for a long time. Not knowing whats inside has some special value to it I think. I think having unopened packs will be worth alot one day. I also hodl DEC (Dark energy crystals) but Ill probably sell them one year after hodling (to minimize my capitol gains taxes).

PAL I wish I kept, as they have a dapp for prediction markets (@dublup). And Oracles can earn more PAL by supporting those markets. I may buy back enough to be an Oracle, but still thinking about it.

I see, would you be looking into dCity? It's cheap SIM now and probably the best time to be a new player if you're going for a long term hodl. Not a financial advice.

I have considered it, but I find myself having trouble finding time to play Splinterlands already.. So I think it may be a good idea just to stick to one game right now. And since I bought land from Splinterlands I have a feeling Ill be even more busy soon.

How much time do I need to put into dCity a week to get a good return and be a good player?

Not a financial advice but 5 minutes a day or a week is already good. The only reason I keep looking at it is just checking the market for some cheaper cards as everything in game is on fire sale. It's both a game and an investment (not financial advice). The action is mostly just excel sheet computing numbers and once you got the sheets done and strategies worked out long term, you can just come back to the game weekly and it's going to generate you SIM.

I think the longest time you will ever spend on the game is thinking of a strategy and having fun with the excel sheet calculating. The rest is just watching your numbers grow as the daily payout comes.

Will send you a long message on that when I get home. The initial learning curve is steep but it's all a numbers game. As soon as you got a strategy worked out, its just buying cards and visiting it once in a while.

Thanks for doing the AMA! going to bring this back with a few more interesting characters from Hive.

So one obvious question is what made you get into Mason Bee Harvesting? Video here for people who are interested in knowing more. Seems like you probably have other hobbies which other one do you like the most? Finally, one crypto-related on where do you see Bitcoin and crypto heading over the next few years?

A lot of questions but you are an interesting character! 😀

After learning about the predators that prey upon the Mason bees I decided to take a few hours every season and harvest them. Out in nature they just make due, but pollen mites, fungus and wasps will diminish their numbers. So by harvesting the cocoons I can greatly increase my yield of bees.

Ive really taken a liking to gardening in the last few years, ive been raising plants for a few decades but in the last five or so years Ive really stepped up how many I have in my yard. If I counted I probably planted a few hundred by now. And every spring seeing them pop up from the ground gives me a special feeling inside like I made it happen. Having my bees visit those plants makes me feel even better. And since I spend so much time on computers and technology I think its important to have some "low-tech" hobbies. Looking forward to growing Cannabis when its legal where I live as well, though right now I cannot do such a thing. But one day I would really like to grow some weed plants.

I think the sky is the limit for crypto, since the effect halving has on coins I think the next 5-15 years will be quite impressive when it comes to price discovery. I think BTC may hit a million dollars or more in our life time and 100s of thousands in the next few years. Alts as long as they stay relevant and will follow Bitcoins success (Altseason). I plan on sticking around in crypto for a long time, and really happy with all the friends (including you Qua) ive made doing so.

Awesome response! I had an idea that was the case re: predators. What kind prey on them? Preymantises?

Few hundred plants are very cool. It's like a full-cycle with you having your plants and the bees coming to them. I bet that is special for sure. Right, figured cannabis was in your cross-hairs for sure.

Yup, I agree. I think we are just at the start of something awesome with Crypto. Alt-season is coming and this community is going to thrive like no tomorrow. Thanks for doing this AMA! it's great to get some other insights into people and I like to call you a good friend. Much love bud.

Pollen mites and gnat sized wasps are the worst of the predators to the bees. And yeah for sure, those bees sure love some of my plants. Especially my blueberry bushes.

Thanks man, likewise... cant wait to meet you one day just like I met @makinstuff

Will focusing on Hive Engine remove interest in hive smt?

0

It seems to me the talks of SMTs have really dropped off since Hive Engines arrival on the scene. I am curious if sidechains happen eventually on Hive, as one of the coins I hodl (Horizen) has native sidechains. Looking forward to what they do with it and maybe Hive will do the same eventually.

But for now I like Hive Engine and happy to buy and sell tokens there. I doubt Ill be buying BEE tokens, as I do not have a need to make my own. But with Diesel pools (see @aggroed's recent post) maybe there will be a need for them and curious to see how it plays out. As I am all about dividends and if there are some good rewards I will consider it.

I have only one question to ask -
Do you do all the things all by your self or you have more with you ???😀🙏

0

I consider myself a hermit, and an introvert. So I prefer doing things myself, I do have a close group of friends I do things with (like hunting, offroading, traveling or camping) as its safer to do those things with someone in case something bad happens.. Nothing worse than hurting yourself or getting stuck somewhere and not being able to get help.

But for the most part I do things by myself and try to find a way to make it work.

What are you mining these days?

Proof of brain: Hive and LBRY
Proof of stake: Horizen
Proof of work: Zcoin aka Firo

Hive is something I try to earn every day, through posting rewards, leasing or curating. Playing Splinterlands, with and without my bots is also like mining to me.

LBRY gives me rewards as well through tipping and milestone rewards, I am also staking a few hundred thousand LBC there for more exposure.

Horizen is a project I have been a part of for a few years now, I used to rent virtual private servers to run their nodes but now I pay for hosting. Its cheaper than the VPSs I can find and I dont have to update all the time.

Firo is similar to Horizen being a zk-snarks coin, I mine it when its cold outside as it uses video cards and CPUs for mining. Been mining it for a couple years as well. Helps warm up my office on this cold mornings... Its protocol MTP (Merkel tree protocol) makes it ASIC resistant. And I think thats important to repel 51% attacks through renting ASICs for double spends.

Nice bit of info in there, I haven't been up to date lately with a lot of these. I wanted to get in on Zen sub 10$ mainly cause I knew they were one of the odd choices of Grayscale but didn't have the liquids to buy a considerable amount at the time so now I'm kinda regretting it, but oh well. Wouldn't have wanted to sell Hive at those prices anyway.

(Edited)

Thanks alot, yeah I saw Grayscales holding as well and just confirmed my belief its probably a good choice of an altcoin. Listening to Rolf @blockops talk about it always gives me closure I made a good choice in picking it early on.

I may buy some Grayscale stock, or maybe Micro strategy sometime in the future.

Remember that Horizen halves, so you didnt "miss the boat" as price discovery will happen again in the next few years when mining rewards drop.. or sooner due to the bull run across the whole market.

I love Firo, but they suffered from a 51% attack like 3 weeks ago? They are supposedly 51%-proof since then though. So there's that. I love lelantus!
It's the only coin I'm mining right now.

Yeah I kept up in their forums on that attack. Was quite interesting, but they addressed it with chainlocks. So we shall see if it happens again.

Very cool you mine XZC.. let's hope they pull through learning from this.

Be ready to get frustrated, you will feel like a fish out of water for a year or so rolling with more experienced students. The learning curve feels very extreme and foreign. But if you stick to it for many months or years you will get better. Just stick with it and you will get better.

Also do not be afraid to tap, its never worth it tearing your joints out of place trying to be a tough guy by not tapping out. People will always respect you if you tap, and make sure to respect others if they tap and release your grip right away.

Zero fees on Hive, its made Splinterlands possible on this chain. Imagine it running on Ethereum, it would be crazy expensive to play and doubt many would play it. I also like three second block times making transactions very fast.

Ah you gotta try it one day.. it's real tasty. In the South it's a favorite of many. The best fried catfish I've had is some hole in the wall cooking joint out in the middle of nowhere.

He's lying to you, catfish are the grossest things ever. Imagine the worst fishy smell you've ever smelled, and then tasting that. That being said, nearly everyone in the south has their own "special" recipe, and you just have to try it over and over until you threaten to punch them for suggesting it.

Once you're too deep into the catfish game, it's too late to turn around. We have the same problem in north Bavaria with the 'Franken'. They insist that 'sour lung' is delicious if made the right way and everyone just knows that it's bs.

rofl! Since ive never caught one I cannot say how gross they are raw. But once cooked they are real tasty. Yeah you gotta season them well and us southerners know how to make a good dry rub for them.

(Edited)

After seeing what others can do with a modified camera I decided to buy a mirrorless DSLR and send it off to Lifepixel to be modified for full spectrum.

Since then I brought it traveling with me and taken all kinds of photos.. check out the infrared and ultraviolet tags on Hive and Steem to see some of my pictures. Ive done macro shots, and landscape.. And star photos when the light pollution is low.

Its really fun, as they look photoshopped but really they are not. Just seeing in other wavelengths of light is pretty amazing. Let alone what you can see at night up in the sky flying around.

My camera is a Lumix GH3, and I use bandpass filters to isolate different wavelengths.

Hah.. I must have a doppelganger around somewhere.

Okay, I'm torn between asking about infrared & ultraviolet photography (like, how did you get interested in that? What kind of equipment do you use?) and your haunted house (like, how long have you lived there? What kind of encounters have you had?)! So I'm going to flip a coin to decide...

Drat.

It landed on its side, so I guess I have to ask you about Justin... 😂

But seriously - would love to hear a bit about photography and/or phantoms.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Hah you can ask both questions, its all good..

I got into IR/UV photography after seeing examples of it online. And at the time someone was selling a camera that would be a good candidate for the conversion. Mirrorless cameras allow you to see in the viewfinder what the camera sees. Unlike mirroed camera that use their own window to view and you would not see the IR/UV preview until you take the picture. I use bandpass filters that screw onto the lens to isolate different wavelenghs and changes the effects of the image.

As for my haunted home, ive lived there over 10 years now. Things have settled down alot in the last 5 years or so but for awhile we were having strange occurrences every month or less. Such as small things like the cats in the house fixating on things we could not see, or hearing knocking from the walls. To me seeing a shadow person, my ex girlfriend seeing a figure in white with no bottom walking by a door.

Shortly after moving here I went to a consignment shop and bought a buddha head, and it seemed to ramp up what was going on.. And made the animals in the house act very strange. Since then I moved it out to my garage and the activity cooled down afterwards. So I assume there was some "potential" in the house and the buddha head was like a energy loudspeaker magnifying the effects. Just a guess, its the best we have come up with.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Coolness - yay!

And that sounds wicked awesome. I'm going to have to poke around online and check it out. I'm hoping to eventually upgrade my current Nikon, so maybe that would work to convert. If not, I might see what I can figure out, because now I'm intrigued!

Oooo, definitely seems like there's something spooky going on there! I've lived in a few places over the decades years (including our current home) with similar sorts of occurrences. And I'd say that guess about the Buddha head acting as an amplifier is spot on - we lived in a duplex years ago that was pretty active, and when a new neighbor moved in & had a necklace they believed was haunted by a grandparent, the activity went into overdrive. We ended up moving a short time later (unrelated to the ghost..lol) but I heard that once they moved out as well, things got quiet again.

Great AMA answers - thanks, @solominer!

What do you do with all the produce you grow and harvest? It seems like it would be more than one person could use.

For my berries, peaches and peppers we freeze them and slowly consume over the year. Sometimes I trade them with friends for other produce. I got a bunch of eggs from my friend @ryulincoln since I gave him some of my sweet potatoes. For what I cannot freeze like my potatoes I store them under my bed.. haha! So far we do not grow enough to keep it all, so we tend to use whatever we have and buy the rest at the market.

Hi Solo! :D

I really like how you share your lifestyle through your posts and find it admirable. Why/how did you decide to have this very nature-tendency kind of lyfestyle? or was it always like that?

Also, what would you personally say are the benefits of Martial arts? and damn! How is it like to live in a haunted house? How do you deal with it? o_o

Hey there @ailindigo

I used to live in a big city with little to no nature, I never really liked it there.. Once I moved to Georgia I was lucky to make friends with some people that liked to spend alot of time outdoors. I loved it. As ive been doing more outdoor stuff I find new projects to get involved in and it keeps snowballing like that..

Being able to defend yourself or others is a big pro to martial arts, its quite empowering. But besides that you learn alot about your body and pushing the limits you thought you had. So doing martial arts helps me keep getting better as long as I practice a little.

Well living in this house used to be a little creepy but since realizing it cannot cause any harm to me its something I rarely worry about. And seems in the last few years the activity has really calmed down for whatever reason.
