Things to Look Forward to!

sailing sunday.jpg

Seems like we are in limbo right now with the blockchain and in the real world. Knowing we will get through it, I like to look forward to the things I will be doing when that happens. Maybe even share a little adventure and inspire other folks who may be too caught up in the here and now.....which is not necessarily that much fun!

How About Some Sailing?!?

The Peeps

With the social distancing to slow the social spreading of the virus, it is almost starting to seem strange to picture hanging with the peeps. Sailing is DEFINITELY good for that. You congregate down by the lake, crack a cold one, shove off and watch the land shrink a little. floating out towards the course and catching up with everyone who has been back hanging with the land people another week. When there is no wind, then you get less sailing than you bargained for and a lot more hanging out. Imagine: no real sailing at all and it is still awesome because you are floating on the water, soaking up the sun, and cracking jokes over a beer or 2.

The Sailing!

Beer and socializing aside, the sailing is pretty cool too. Learning the intricacies of wind, tactics, sail trim, boat dynamics and crew teamwork. Athletically, it is a series of sprints separated by periods of being rail meat and leaning as much of you as you can over the rail to flatten the boat. Flat is fast as the more keel you have in the water, the more speed and control you have. I am a trimmer which means I pull ropes and do what I am told. I enjoy flying the spinnaker as well. There is nothing like having a wave catch under the stern, and heaving the sheets and pulling the boat down the front of the wave, with the wind at your back, and breaking 14 knots in a 27-foot boat.

So much to learn and so fun doing it.

The Regattas

Sailing is awesome enough. When you take the best crew and enter the boat in a weekend series of races against other competitive crews, then you step it up a few notches. They pony up hundreds of dollars, plan the trip to trailer the boat to another town, and join a bunch of other sailing addicts in a weekend of fun. Seeing old friends, jostling through a crowded starting line and yelling obscenities at each other. Knowing you are in a competitive race with others vying for the win, in virtually the same boat. It is tactics and crew work that make the different, and a new set of carbon sails doesn't hurt. Banging over the waves a few hours while soaking in sun, sunscreen and beer for 4 or 5 races in a day. Tangled ropes, shifting responsibilities, and he chaos of mother nature pushing everyone around on top of the lake. Regattas are pretty special.

The Afterparty

At Regattas, the return to the shore is accompanied with food, beer/rum, and funny stories of the day. During the week in beer-can racing, it is a little of the same and then a long drive home. Cleaning up the boat and stowing everything sobers you up a bit and you drown that with a pint at the club house. The sun goes down and you are glad for the gift of semi-aquatic adventure. It is summer time and it will only be a few days 'til we do it all again.

When this all blows, over, and it will, we will be back and doing these things. Enjoying this life and living in the moment not as dominated by uncertainty. During these events, remember the moment as it fuels us in challenging times. The memories of challenging times can also humble us when things are going very well.

How cool, @zekepickleman!!

I love sailing and the regattas in Newport, Rhode Island, and Annapolis, Maryland are some of my favorite places! You have a great looking crew! I hope that the storm blows over soon and you get back to where you belong!! And back to the beer!!

Who else is going to let me know which one is best for my ruby lips to be sipping on?

As an aside, last summer I went on one helluva ride that pumped my adrenaline for weeks!

I wish you well in your hibernation!
