Seven Days, Seven Games. Day 1: Chess
A goodly number of years ago (I'm embarrassed to say how many, because it was a lot) I held a job where I got to work from home and perform some IT Management magic from the comfort of my own basement. Of course, I get to do that now, too, but the difference at the time was that I needed two computers and an actual desk/office phone to do this. This was the last time I ever used a phone that was not my mobile.
Working from home is not the point of this post, however. What is important is that it was this particular position that got me interested in other avenues to pursue, that I am still pursuing today.
The desk phone was important. I was on the phone for 4-6 hours/day. On conference calls. Mostly listening. Little talking. But listening to people drone on and on and on. I couldn't concentrate on writing code because of the monotonous droning, but I had to do something to pass the time. So I started to carve wood. And cork. Soon I had a number of carving utensils, a bunch of wood, and a crap tonne of cork. And before I knew it, I had a set of chess pieces.
These are some of the cork pieces that I carved. My first chess set. I ended up carving a set from wood which I ultimately gave to one of my son's as a gift, but I still have the cork set.
What I discovered as I was carving these sets was that I really enjoyed carving (and I still do it today), but that I also really enjoyed creating things. Ultimately I started to design and create games.
I am still creating games, now more seriously than then, and my goal is to become self-sufficient enough to be able to support myself my family with it. I currently have four in the works that I plan to release commercially, and I have a number of others that I've created either for myself or for my family. I'll post these in the coming days. And it all started with this one cork chess set.

Talking on phones definitely is able to drive a person to whittling away at something, chess set an exceptionally good idea!
Hands took over while the ears were listening to the droning on, subconsciously doing what the inner being really wanted to do, gaming!

.Excellent story! Lovely that you still have that chess set. Shame you had to drink in order to have enough corks! ;)
I certainly learned to appreciate wine. 😀
Wonderful use. What about beer bottle caps? Should we keep and hodl those?
lol. Yes, definitely hodl them! I've personally made good use of plenty a beer cap. I think I'll post about one of those uses tomorrow.
Wow! I am impressed. I would have never thought of that. Such a creative mind you have! I held on to plastic bottle caps and used them for DIY art projects. ;0)
Thank you! You might be able to deduce from the picture that I also put together a tic-tac-toe board; the playing pieces were also made from cork!
