Popcorn Goodness

Last week I was gifted with a new kitchen goodie: a new popcorn maker! And not just any popcorn maker, but a Pokemon popcorn maker! Chaching!

Lookit it! Isn't it cute?

Well, this set me to thinking. I have two other popcorn makers, both oil-based, but this new Poke-maker is an air-popper. I started to wonder if this air-popper popped better popcorn than the others. So, a taste test was formed! Which popcorn maker pops the tastiest kernel of corn.

Contender 1: The new Pokeball popcorn maker. An air popper with a cup on top for melting butter.

Contender 2: Theatre-style popcorn maker. An oil-based popper that looks like it belongs in a small theatre.

Contender 3: A more basic stove-top popper. Also an oil-based popper, this one sits on the stovetop and has a crank to keep the kernels moving so they don't burn.

The Rules

Each popper would pop the same type of corn kernel.
Each popper would pop according to the instructions provided.
No toppings would be used.

The stovetop popper uses three tablespoons of oil and 1/3 cup of kernels.

The theatre popper uses one tablespoon of oil and 1/3 cup of kernels.

The Poke-maker uses only 1/3 cup of kernels.

I happen to have a variety of popcorn kernels in the house, so the next step was to choose the particular variety to test against.

Ultimately I decided on a red kernel because, frankly, I had enough for all three poppers.

Now, let's fast forward to post-popping. The end result was, honestly, a great deal of popcorn.

Everyone in the house got to choose their favourite, and the overwhelming decision was that there was not really any difference. Meh. I was dissapointed. My personal favourite was the stove-top popper popcorn; with the three tablespoons of oil that went into it, it had a little more flavour than the others. For the most part, though... well... it all tasted like popcorn.

It was a whole lot tastier with some Kettle Corn seasoning on top! Mmmm.

I'd never before seen a Pokemon popcorn maker and at first thought it was something based on a character from the movie WALL-E!

Looks like you guys had a fun time experimenting and it made for a fun family night of bonding! It's all about the melted butter I add to the popcorn for me. And then shake on a bunch of Himalayan or Kosher sea salt.🍿🧂🍿🧂🍿

I barely have room for my cookware. Where do you store all of those popcorn makers? Have you tried the silicone microwave popcorn makers? I love the one I ordered from Amazon a couple months ago. No oil needed and it folds almost flat for storage.

Thank you for giving me a blogging idea!💯

It really was fun, and it definitely all tasted better when we began to flavour it.

My kitchen is definitely overflowing with appliances, too! I'm beginning to feel like a hoarder; just the other day when putting some groceries away I had found an appliance - a small individual pie maker - that I had tucked away and completely forgotten about. I will keep the most commonly used ones on the countertop; the others obviously get squirreled away until I remember I need them. It's embarrasing, really.

So you are guilty too, huh? I prefer us to be described as a "packrats" versus "hoarders."
Truth be told there have been more than one occasions when I've been saved by having backups of appliances and other hidden gems tucked away in a moment of crisis. I'm sure you can relate! @wwwiebe

Nina, thank you for reminding me of this word, I am so in love with it. well, I love both, but 'hoarder' I always use sarcastically (even if sarcasm is not seen), but the "packrat" is another deal, hehe. so true! I will use it proudly... I just have not to forget about it, hehe

Hahahaha!!! Love this! See, you do have a life 😜

The popcorn may have all pretty much tasted the same but c'mon - a pokeball (or whatever you call them)... that's super rad!

I have never seen a red kernel in my life!

The Pokemon and theatre-style popcorn makers are both so cute! What a fun experiment, and your family was so kind to help with the taste-testing! 😁

Thank you! It was a fun way to spend a bit of the afternoon, for sure. We didn't eat nearly all the popcorn, so we won't do it again any time soon, but it was certainly neat!

Great post, I just make popcorn in a regular heavy bottomed saucepan. haha That first one is pretty cool looking!

It's definitely a novelty item for my children, all of whom are infatuated with Pokemon. Personally, I"m just too lazy to want to spend the time popping it myself, so I'm happy to have some appliance do it for me. 😂

I love popcorn.

I have one of the stove top Whirley poppers and that is the only one for now. I usually use peanut oil and a pat of butter so the popcorn has a little flavor, even though it doesn't really taste buttery that way, it is still better (to me).... and salt of course.

Many years ago when the air poppers came out, our family got one and I never really cared for the popcorn out of that. It was too bland and the salt wouldn't stick to it. I HAVE to have salt. 😄

I always wondered if the theater ones really made popcorn taste like the theater popcorn as it seems to be the best in the world, but I do think it matters what oil you use and the grade of popcorn kernels you use.

Sometimes I like to sprinkle some grated parmesan cheese on it after it has popped, but while it is still warm....mmmMMMmmmmm

Enjoyed your post.

Hey, thanks for stopping by!

I do agree with the blandness of the air popper. It needs oil to have any chance of flavour.

My personal favourite topping is the White Cheddar sprinkle that I keep tucked away in the cupboard. There's a tasty Kettle Corn, too, but I usually keep going back to cheddar. I'll need to try some freshly grated parmesan! That does sound tasty.

You have obviously been on a quest for the perfect pop for some time. How disappointing it must be that no gadget is better than any other! I use a saucepan with a lid. No measuring involved, remove popped corn and melt the butter in the same still hot pot, easy clean up.

You are still very funny I see!

The automatic popping appliances are great for parties and are usually worth at least a few moments of "Oooooh" and "Aaaah" responses. Beyond that they need to stay off the countertops. They're huge!

I was like.. "what is this thing?!" and now I know. lol. And the top is a bowl! Sweet deal. My wife loves popcorn. I can take it or leave it. I hate the hull getting stuck in my teeth.

Hahaha. Yeah, I've long campaigned for popcorn to be sold with a small pack of dental floss. That'd be a killer idea, I think.
