A Letter to my Son on his Graduation

Dear Joshua:

Congratulations, son! Today you have graduated High School and, by proxy, have completed the first phase of your life and are now transitioning to adulthood.

The road to this point has not been easy for you; you've had trials and tribulations that have made navigating your teen years rocky and confusing, more than more. You have laughed, loved, suffered heartache and confusion and I have laughed, loved, and cried with you through the years. Despite all adversity you have pulled through and grown into a very fine young man.

There are many points of your life that I remember with great fondness, admiration, and pride. I remember the pride on your face when you first learned to stick a straw into a juice box; I remember with great glee your antics in lego league when the team had to plan out what to do with a "mystery cup," and I will always remember with love the peace and tranquility that come over your entire being when you play the Horn. There were negative times too, of course, but they are easily outshone by the good.

With this stage of your life complete it is time to look forward as to what may lie next and I am excited to see the possibilities that are laid out in front of you. I believe you will find your own way. You are not one to hack, slash, and brutalise your way through life; rather, you'll be sly and rely on much charm and natural wit, of which you have plenty. Regardless of where the roads may take you, please allow me one last attempt at being 'dad' and offer some advice that, I hope, will serve you for many years to come.

  • Be proud of yourself.
  • Always reach for better than what you are.
  • Don't settle for anything.
  • Find a woman who makes you happy, then make her happy.
  • Keep playing music.
  • When you meet someone, shake their hand firmly. Look them in the eyes.
  • Always introduce yourself to new people. "I am Joshua. It's nice to meet you."
  • Repeat this to yourself once every day: "I am Joshua Wiebe."
  • When out with your friends, always be the first to offer a toast with the first drink.
  • Wash. Daily. Good Christ, man, shower.
  • Wear good clothing. Take pride in your appearance.
  • Laugh a lot.
  • Don't drink and drive.
  • Take up a hobby.
  • Sing like no one is listening.
  • Do not ever be in a hurry to make a decision. If someone is pressuring you to make an immediate decision, the correct answer is probably "No."
  • Think first, speak second. Sometimes do not speak at all. Know the difference.
  • Never make a decision when angry.
  • Learn to cook properly.
  • Work hard, then play hard, in that order.
  • Fly a kite on windy days.
  • Ride your bike on calm days.
  • Build a snowman in the winter.
  • There is nothing wrong with wearing a tie to work.
  • Get a dog. Or a cat. Despite any bad days you may have, they will always be happy to see you.
  • Grow a vegetable in the spring and summer. For you, I suggest okra.
  • Learn to harvest it and cook it.
  • Read poetry.
  • Write poetry.
  • Learn to spend time without electronics.
  • Do not have regrets. There are no do-overs.
  • We can not always choose what happens to us in life, but we are always in control of how we react to it.
  • Know that you have two parents who love you very much, and who still wish you were five years old.

Navigating life does not get easier. There will be times when you look back and wish for "the simple things" again. When you do, I hope you think of laughter, games, smiles, and hugs. It is my sincerest hope that I have taught you as much about life as you have taught me; you have been in my life for 18 years now, I have loved you since before you were born, and I am definitely a better man for it all. For that I thank you, son.

As you look forward and begin to plan your next steps and find your way know that I will be here to help, to guide, and to offer advice. I am very proud to be your father.

Love,
Dad

Thank you @ninahaskin! My daughter viewed graduating high school more as a technicality and formality than anything else; she already had college lined up and was planning her career. Joshua, not so much. Any parent will understand that every child and every person is their own unique individual and, though Joshua is just as bright as his sister, he is driven by completely different things. He's not sure what his next steps are, yet, but I'll support him and guide him to help him figure it out.

What a wonderful letter to your son @wwwiebe, and to think it will never be lost as it's here on the blockchain forever, what a legacy! Congratulations to Joshua on graduating!

Thank you very much @lizelle! Two weeks ago his graduation was in doubt because he simply wasn't handing in his work! It was infuriating. He pulled it through at the end though! He even admitted to me that he calculated how to perform just the bare minimum to pass ELA. Grrrrrrr.

Thank you! Amazing and infuriating simultaneously! 😂 The world will definitely be his oyster if he just learns to want to shuck it!

Thank you @bliss11! And that gif is so funny; when I was looking at cakes to celebrate, I was sorely tempted to buy a unicorn themed green and pink one!

I love this so much, @wwwiebe. All kids should receive this much love and this tender and beautiful and intelligent advice on the cusp of adulthood. I wish him well!

I had three kids graduate a year ago (one from college, two from high school) and it is such an incredible time — watching these amazing people stepping forth, taking charge of their lives, and becoming whoever they are meant to be.

Thank you @jayna! I do wish I could have helped him learn some of these lessons earlier in life, but there were other challenges that included hospitalisations and many visits with counselors and doctors. Clinical Depression is a dark, evil disease, but today he smiles and laughs. He'll figure out his way. He's only 18.

It's funny; I remember being 18, on my own, in college, living with a roommate, and thinking that this adult thing was great. Now I look at my own 18 year old and think he's still just a baby, what right do I have to set him loose on the world? 😂

You're absolutely right that it's an amazing, exciting time. They have so many options available to them. It almost makes me jealous!

That`s a very touching letter he got. Really sweet! When we will read it once more over the years, maybe in 2040, he will appreciate it even more.

Thank you! I really hope he keeps it and enjoys it. I noticed that he had tucked it away with his other graduation memorabilia, such as his diploma. He's a great kid. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he decides to do next.

That letter is wonderful Victor, and not only you are proud to be his father, Joshua can be proud to have you as his father.
There are a lot of really good and nice advices, but I like these two most:

  • Think first, speak second. Sometimes do not speak at all. Know the difference.
  • Do not have regrets. There are no do-overs.

I have twins, my daughter likes to go to school and wants to go to the university after she graduates next year. My son has left school and does not know what he wants to do. I think he is more like I am was in his age. So I am pretty sure that he will make his way too.

I wish your son all the best, but with such a loving father I don't see any problems 😁

Thank you so much for the kind words! Of course, I can't help but think I'm doing everything absolutely wrong, but I keep trying. 😃 Interestingly, my daughter has her life all planned out, too. Joshua, on the otherhand, is taking it day by day. It'll all work out for him, and for your son too, I'm sure.

Thanks for stopping by!

Our kids could be siblings I believe - the girls as well as the boys, although your Joshua still goes to school, but living from day to day is something my son knows very well 😉
But with his first girlfriend his thinking has changed a bit and now he begins to search for a real work. After some very hard months he is in a governmental program now, which is nice and helps him, but he does not earn very much, and da girlfriend costs some money too ;)

I think, especially when we think we are doing everything wrong with our kids, we are doing it right - that's only my weird logic ;) lol

You are very welcome Victor, I wish you a wonderful day, and take care.
