ESPAÑOL

POLARIS

ENGLISH

POLARIS

It was a stormy night, the one where the screams of the mothers mixed with the strong and icy blizzard. Alarms sounded warning of a siege that forced even the weakest to take the power of a weapon. The murmurs became sounds that lacerated the hard breasts of the guards, who swallowed their fear out of fervor for the battle.

I was a sentry who watched from the height of the whitest tower for any movement that would bring danger. My eyes could find the sinuosities of the dark, thick mist and endure the merciless, icy wind of an impertinent storm. There was no entity in the whole of the north that the stars would abandon in order to deprive it of its clairvoyance, it was I who possessed all the power of the heights.

However, that night I was afraid, more than of a storm of piercing hail or the attack of colossal men or the living dead. Never have I witnessed and participated in a threat that has swept through millenary cities and, swiftly devouring any glimmer of life in its path, extinguished with the intention of leaving no trace of it.

From a distance our ears received the frightening and creaking sound emitted by those titanic and impressive machines. Mechanical voices pierced the hiss of the wind and made the fearful hearts of the inhabitants of the Polaris city tremble. People swore to see over the cold walls scarlet lights that belonged to the sparkling eyes of those monstrous artifices.

The citizens fled in fear to their houses and shelters, crossed the snowy roads and rolled around in despair. The imposing Iron Tower remained static; the ruler of the city lives in it. He leaned out of his wide balcony along with his wife. Both looked at the horizon with trembling bodies, hands on their chests and faces drawn by fear.

There was a sepulchral and sinister silence, he himself invoked death which was walking through the streets petulant as the new ruler of the city. The prayers of mercy were raised directly to our sovereign star by which our city was baptized.

That night was as dazzling as any other atrocious night. The dense gloom could not keep us from its luminescence which was for us a screen of hope. I saw it by imagining that I was beside it. My mind was focused to such an extent that my ears stopped hearing the terrifying sounds of those mechanical demons.

I swore to see a great white shining door, from the center of Polaris; our star, and from it the mightiest warriors from above. Their bodies glimmered mounted on silver horses, while they waved their colossal swords that with flames seemed to dominate the sky.

I felt that we were blessed by our mother star who had taken pity on our prayers, but then I fell into reality, and I awoke from that reverie that had given me only fleeting peace of mind. I neglected my work and, without realizing it, the danger that lay ahead of us was already right in front of our walls.
