Essence of Autumn

I live at 35°N latitude, in a temperate area, and autumn has barely begun here. We've had temperatures down into the 40s(°F) at night (down to about 6°C for you metric folks) a couple of nights, but the daytime temperatures have been quite pleasant lately. Only a few of the earliest-changing trees (such as the Dogwoods) and a few shrubs are beginning to show any color-change to their leaves. It will probably be at least a couple more weeks before the hardwoods begin to turn.

Some people in my part of the world like to decorate their property this time of year in themes of the autumn season. Decorations can range widely from small bales of hay, flowers, pumpkins, scarecrows, and old farming implements in honor of the harvest time, to ghosts, skeletons, and such in honor of Halloween.

The following house has decorations of the first sort. There are beautiful potted-plants in full bloom, a bale of hay, a couple of scarecrows, and some colorful pumpkins. It is such a lovely scene!

Halloween is not celebrated in all parts of the world. It grew out of the old Samhain traditions of many folk cultures in Europe, where departed ancestors and friends were remembered each year. It was thought that the "veil" that separated the afterlife from this life was thinnest this time of year. After the influx of Christianity into the countryside of Europe, people were hesitant to abandon their centuries-old traditions, so the religious holiday of "All Souls' Day" was invented by the church to appease the people.

The following house features the other end of the spectrum of seasonal decorations. Besides the inflatable & stacked pumpkins, there are ghosts, a skeleton with a pumpkin head, and... a dragon...? I've never seen a dragon for Halloween, but hey... cool dragon! 😁

For anyone wanting to see the original photos of two houses, here they are in their unedited form:

Finally, here is a meme that someone shared in Discord recently, from the snarkecards website. I thought it was hilarious! 😂

Our fall is in full swing here, but we have just mostly yellows. The only reds and oranges that we might see are from trees planted by folks in town. Only Vine Maples in the forest might give a glimpse of the fiery colors if the summer season has been just right for them.

We are rural, so we don't get a lot of decorations. I have a small pumpkin and scarecrow display on my front deck, but no one sees it but us or any UPS or FedEx deliverymen.

I love fall and the pumpkins and flowers that go with it; scarecrows and ghosts and whatnot. And, yes, our stores here sell the dragons like what is in your picture, lol! A haunted dragon, maybe? Thanks for sharing @thekittygirl! Take care and have a good night.💜
