Dogwood in bloom

There are several species of the Dogwood tree, but Cornus florida is the most common in my area and the species that is in my yard. Each year the dogwood trees begin blooming about the time that the Bradford Pear blossoms are fading, leaving the neighborhood bathed in a swath of white blossoms.

As with many words in the English language, an exact etymology of the name of this tree can't be traced with absolute certainty. One theory, however, suggests that the name came from the Old English word dagwood, from which the hard wood was used to make "dags" (sharp objects such as daggers, skewers, and arrows). [1]

I wrote about the dogwood trees on-chain a couple of years ago and included an original photographic artwork which I constructed from a hitherto crappy cellphone shot. To see how that artwork (shown below) was made, see the following post:

I am now placing that artwork in Creative Commons licensing, too, in case anyone wishes to use it with attribution to me. Enjoy!

Blossoms are pretty, never seen this tree it is bigger than I thought. Nice interesting read about how they were used.

The Dogwood is British Columbia's Official tree and should just be starting to bud now, unfortunately not very many in my area but my street is largely Cherry blossom varieties, Magnolia, Poplar, and a smattering of Apple, apricot and Plum. Thanks for sharing @thekittygirl
