Are you good at what you do?

I am currently on vacation.
.
.
.
.
I am currently working.

Well, not right at this moment, but I have spent four hours of my day so far in meetings to get a handle on a training that I will deliver next week - it is a highly complex, customer-specific event that is outside of my area of comfort by about a factor of 243. I don't want to spend my day doing this as I have a multitude of other things to do around the house, but this is the way it has to be due to the scheduling and I will make certain IO take some additional time off later due to it.

I am good at my job. I am good at pretty much every job I have had, not because I am talented, but because I take what I do seriously enough that I will learn what I need to do, when I need to, including the skill of "winging it" - which is associated with working without all information or necessary skills and coping - it is a stress position.

but, probably one of the reasons I am good at the jobs I have is because I take jobs that are Suitable for me as a person. The jobs that I have had to take for immediate financial reasons are generally the ones I am the worst at and therefore, the ones I will have to work the hardest for. I don't like working hard unnecessarily at something I don't really want to work hard for, so I try to put myself in a position where I can pick and choose the work that I do.

In the case of next week's training, the setup was not handled by me and the customer dictated training terms, instead of the training team - not a great position as customers will overreach and extend scope, even if it is not in the best interest of their participants. I always take the customer side in doing what is best for them, not necessarily what they think they want. This set up is definitely going to be an "over promise, under deliver" scenario, instead of the reverse.

In my opinion, a core part of service as a professional supplier is being able to identify and acknowledge customer needs and then suggest and influence outcomes to get the best results for that customer. While many people and businesses look to maximize immediate profits, I believe that building a trusted relationship will be far more valuable as it can be stretched over time. Thinking short-term will often fail to build or weaken relationships already established and will cost more in the future.

I see this kind of mentality often on Hive also, where for example people will react to something that gives an immediate vote of support, but not something that would lead to building support over time in the future. People want a whale upvote, without considering that someone like me already has a whale upvote - it is just that you will need 4 of them (at 100%) to get it. I find this mentality telling in regards to a person's investment mindset.

Do you want to get a lump sum payout today, or the potential for a much larger amount distributed over time?

Of course, people love to get those big upvotes that happen from time to time and these stick well in the memory, but if one is actually good at what they do, it is far more "lucrative" to build an account into something that is able to attract steady support, rather than the lottery wins. For me, I do this through the kind of content I create and engagement in various ways, but perhaps you might have an approach that is more suitable for you.

For example, my post last night gave the opportunity to anyone to post a comment advertising their account and I would likely give them a follow and see where it leads. All it would take to get a follow from a relatively large orca was 100 words or less, but I have got 4 comments doing the 1st task. The 2nd task was to advertise and tag an account one admires and it would be this comment that would get a bit of a larger upvote from me - I got two comments for this task. Funnily, I already followed most of the people who commented.

Essentially, people have so far given up an opportunity for a follow from a growing orca account who while today can only offer a 1.50 or so as a 100% vote, if the price of Hive climbs 10x to $2.20, that would be a 15 dollar vote and I could do that 10x a day. That is likely significant to some people, but the opportunity isn't "attractive" enough today and that future is uncertain, so why bother?

Then going back to the title question, are you good at what you do? If you are indeed good at what you do, that support would likely lead in various ways to other supporters over time and if that future of higher value Hive does eventuate, you wouldn't just be getting support from a mid-sized orca, you might have attracted several more and have built an audience around you being good at what you do.

I have always found it interesting how many people take the "bird in the hand" approach of a large payoff without participating in where sustainable value lays. I see people talk about giving to the community but not building their own account for a future where that small and what they consider useless vote now is worth more and offers a significant boost to someone who gets it.

When I arrived in Finland, most people had very little debt because their parents had gone through a world war and understood the value of thinking (saving in this case) for the future. However, since then, the grandchildren of those who saw war are squandering resources and increasingly going into debt for short-term desires - instant gratification. This is happening across the globe and is ensuring that the average person is moving increasingly closer to having nothing, while those they satisfy their desires through, take it all.

Income gap is one thing - mindset gap is something different and each of us can learn about and effect in multiple ways to improve our position - but no one is going to do it for you - even if they give you the opportunity to do it for yourself. Changing attitude isn't enough however, it has to be backed-up with changing behaviors and especially, actively working against intuition and defaults that work against the improvement.

You can say how positive you are for change, you can shout it to the world - but look in the mirror and say it - watch your face, feel your body - do you really want to change?

so, while being good at something is great, there are a host of other things that surround that core that are required to some degree to actually utilize what you are good at. I hear people say "but I am an introvert" as if it is an excuse for their lack of engagement, without considering or acknowledging that there are plenty of introverts outside of their comfort zone daily, doing what they must so they can enjoy more of what they want.

Any excuse to not have to change.

The world is to blame of course, I was never given the opportunity, other people cheat, it is where I was born, my parents fault, the government laws, my genetics, the teacher who told me off, my health, my legs are too short, my head to big, I am too smart for people to understand me, I know too much, people are idiots, the world doesn't appreciate my skills and personality....

It is all out of my control. I am useless.

It doesn't matter how many quotes of people you consider greater than you get posted, if you feel you don't have some agency over your own experience - you will forever be the victim.

But it is my day off - It's not fair. '

You know, those people who others oft quote are commonly those who understood that the world isn't fair, they accepted it as it is and then went about learning and discovering ways to improve it from their perspective. Rarely was there an overnight result and even rarer did they accomplish their goals without a myriad of failures gathered under their belt. What they all have in common though is what they do. Something.

There is no guarantee of reaching targets in this life, but there will always be a result from what we do.

Are you good enough at what you do that you think you can affect the outcome?

lol, a lot of people point at you that you get good rewards. Maybe that's why you are questioning, "Are you good at your job?"

For me, I don't know if I am good at my job or not. If I am good at writing on hive or not.

But there was one tweet that I read a month ago. I even wrote a post based on it. The lesson still sticks with me.

If you have to do something daily, you better try to do your best in it.

And I was like a lot of people around me complain about their job, business, life and other things. They still do it daily.

So, if I am doing something daily, I will try to do the best I can. And not complain about it. Otherwise stop doing it.

And if we even improve 0.01% daily, that's a lot over a long time.

I used to write really bad posts on steemit. When I came back to hive in March 2020, I was still writing bad posts. But now, I have been writing for 50+ days daily. I try to add little bit of improvements. Like edit a little more. Find better words. Find better graphics.

And I believe that I have improved considerably in the last two months.

So, if we keep improving, one day we will be better at our job.😄

lol, a lot of people point at you that you get good rewards. Maybe that's why you are questioning, "Are you good at your job?"

There is 3.5 years of my history on Hive for people to follow the story and process, and I have even documented much of it in various ways too. What isn't directly on Hive but comes into my work is all of the experience before I was on Hive. No one comes in a blank slate.

If you have to do something daily, you better try to do your best in it.

I agree. It is better to do a crap job well than a mediocre job averagely. Funny thing is, people might get a sliver of what a great job could be, but they don't put there all into it because it doesn't give them a salary.

And if we even improve 0.01% daily, that's a lot over a long time.

Incremental change adds up fast and compounds to speed the process.

I try to add little bit of improvements. Like edit a little more. Find better words. Find better graphics.

These things will add up and have the benefit of developing skills that are applicable in real life.

So, if we keep improving, one day we will be better at our job.

Every day we are better at our jobs :)

Funny how even a daily negativity does not actually improve the quality of their complaining, nor of their situation.

And if we even improve 0.01% daily, that's a lot over a long time.

Yet when we put even a small effort into improvement, life's little woes seem to start taking a back seat.

not because I am talented, but because I take what I do seriously enough that I will learn what I need to do, when I need to, including the skill of "winging it"

Persistence and perseverance will outshine talent pretty much every single time!

a core part of service as a professional supplier is being able to identify and acknowledge customer needs and then suggest and influence outcomes to get the best results for that customer.

That is the key to success in ANY service orientated business or venture and is also applicable in what you mentioned after...

it is far more "lucrative" to build an account into something that is able to attract steady support, rather than the lottery wins.

I actually had this VERY conversation with someone this morning when they essentially DM'd me on discord to ask how they can "make more money" on Hive. There is never a short answer to that kind of question because it is comprised of many facets... the first being that it shouldn't be the money that drives you in the first place.

I found that to be true in my business too. I always looked at what we did like this: "I was not offering the customer a product or service... I was offering them an EXPERIENCE. When you look at it like that and you offer them just that... it builds those long term clients that will not only support you forever - but are also the ones that afford you the one of the most difficult forms of positive advertising... that being "word of mouth".

Great post - Now bugger off and go enjoy some time off haha!

Yeah, there is no set formula, but I think that if one was to combine and overlay the process of the successful accounts and look for similarities, there would be a pretty clear path.

it builds those long term clients that will not only support you forever - but are also the ones that afford you the one of the most difficult forms of positive advertising... that being "word of mouth".

Precisely. It becomes a personal relationship and the commendation is from friend to friend, about a friend. Perhaps part of the problem for many is that we don't really do personal anymore, we have everything suggested to us by algorithms - "people like you have liked..."

That is a VERY valid point - not to mention the fact also, that so much of what we do is electronic (especially of late).

I enjoy this too. This is my time off :)

hahaha ok ok! I share the same sentiment actually :)

Well enjoy either way :)

Wise words (I'm already tired of starting a comment with this phrase, but I can't say otherwise).
There is something special in your articles, it's hard to say what, especially since the language barrier bothers me. But I'll try...

The word that most accurately characterizes the feature of your letters is "charisma". Perhaps soon you will be able to call yourself "I, @tarazkp - a writer" :)

The language barrier can be an issue, but the more one exposes themselves, the greater the skills become. Same with writing, photography, running or anything else one might want to improve at.

It is funny, I feel that I will never call myself a writer :D

Hive is as anything else in life. It is much better to spend time understanding, interacting, and finding where you feel comfortable than just focusing in the short reward. When you do what you like, "working" is enjoyable, you just love doing it and when you love what you do, you do it passionately and rewards come right away.

and when you love what you do, you do it passionately and rewards come right away.

It is funny how few don't get this. While potentially not monetary, there is always a reward in being able to what one loves. Some people don't dance - but they would miss the opportunity if they could no longer use their legs. Why wait to learn and discover great loves?

I believe it's good to find ways to work smarter. And that requires planning and long term vision. Instant gratification pulls people to not only debt, but also poor jobs, poor marriages, poor character. Self discipline is mandatory for success. Few are willing to do the work if they do not see instant results because they lack vision. They lack a mindset set on quality performance.

People are great in finding excuses to not change. It's my bad relatives, it's my ex, it's the economy, it's my debt, it's my neighbour etc. Excuses are not for the winners. Winners never quite because they always have a vision, big bright vision, for their future. You can't force someone to change for the better. You can guide the horse to the water, but you can't force him to drink.

Hive is a reflection of human nature at its basics.

Yes!

You can't force someone to change for the better.

I say it is like exercise - you can't benefit from someone else doing the work.

Which makes it super interesting :)

Fair is in April here, and it was cancelled this year due to the Pandemic. Too bad, so sad.

I actually live well on an extremely limited budget, poverty line stuff. I am able to do so because I limited my exposure by owning my house outright, driving a shit box car and avoiding impulse chasing. I made some seriously bad choices during my working days that severely limit my income now. But I did something all the time, and had a hell of a lot of fun doing so. It's a good trade so far as I am concerned.

My favorite "It's my mamma's fault because she once put me on the potty chair backwards, scaring me for life."

I've made my choices. I regret a few, but live the consequences of choice every day and generally with a smile. It's all my doing, but it's pretty damn good all in all. I am the outcome.

The best thing about the fairs when I was a kid were the baked potatoes. @galenkp knows what I am talking about.

Bad choices is what youth is for - but I feel that "youth" is now considered anyone under 40 :D

The incredible reasons some people have for not being able to do some things continually surprise me - not that they have an excuse, but they can bring themselves to validate ridiculous reasons.

I read your post from last night, along with some of the comments on it. I was a little busy to comment on it myself at the time, but I think one of the "problems" with that task is that people have a problem with selling themselves, and that is essentially what the task entailed. You have 100 words to sell yourself, and that is something that a lot of people are not comfortable with.

Ultimately, though, the whole experience of HIVE and making progress on it is about selling yourself. If people took you up on your task, they would have 100 words to sell themselves and their interests to you and your followers. Then, if any of those folks visited their blog, they would have a "Second date" opportunity to sell themselves to potential new followers. But that is just not something a lot of people are comfortable with.

I think the instant gratification mentality hurts a lot of people's ability to sell themselves. People look around at the bigger accounts and try to mimic how they post, expecting to get the same results. By becoming a parrot of what someone else is doing, they are not putting their best self forward, or as this post speaks to, not doing something they are good at, and then wonder why the rewards are not what they wanted.

People really need to work on selling themselves if they want to find long term success on HIVE or any other platform where they put together original content. As has been said in countless places, HIVE is not for everyone. But those who do what they love and sell themselves over the long term will carve out a worthwhile piece of the honeycomb.

You have 100 words to sell yourself, and that is something that a lot of people are not comfortable with.

For sure. But many of those same people will spend a lot of time and effort openly giving their opinions on others and try to convince the audience that their view is valid. It is still trying to make a sale and while it seems not about themselves - they are selling their own opinion.

they would have a "Second date" opportunity to sell themselves to potential new followers. But that is just not something a lot of people are comfortable with.

This is the point of this post. Even if good at a narrow skill, there are clusters of other skills that are necessary to empower it. Getting comfortable is a learnable skill.

By becoming a parrot of what someone else is doing, they are not putting their best self forward

I would go further that it is somewhat disingenuous and tends to show in their presentation.

HIVE is not for everyone. But those who do what they love and sell themselves over the long term will carve out a worthwhile piece of the honeycomb.

Yep.

You have 100 words to sell yourself, and that is something that a lot of people are not comfortable with.

I have that problem, but I did play along. I had a story Idea floating in my head, (they never finish floating around), How to make an autobiography in 100 words, not possible at all, so I started at the beginning, the real beginning, but it wasn't about me so much as it was the story Idea.

A sales pitch is nothing more than a story after all.

People look around at the bigger accounts and try to mimic how they post, expecting to get the same results

It is unfortunate in this day and age, with as long as the internet has been around, and social interaction on line have been around that people still feel they need to parrot/mimic others in the hopes of making it big, instead of being themselves.

Thinking short-term will often fail to build or weaken relationships already established and will cost more in the future

This is more like what I preach to my friends almost all the time. I ask them questions like dont you want ti be like those who give you upvotes and make you happy? But most of them are fixed on withdrawing every single minute and forgetting to build their account, forgetting to build relationships and so on. I am quite new on the blockchain and i must say that i am doing fairly well in getting to know people.

so, while being good at something is great, there are a host of other things that surround that core that are required to some degree to actually utilize what you are good at. I hear people say "but I am an introvert" as if it is an excuse for their lack of engagement, without considering or acknowledging that there are plenty of introverts outside of their comfort zone daily, doing what they must so they can enjoy more of what they want.

I can actually relate to this "I am an introvert" mindset... I was a sufferer of this. It was difficult at first but until I realized that in order to succeed as an entrepreneur, I have to break out of my shell and go for what I want... Because at the end of the day, it's not how I feel but what I want

Feelings are heavily overrated and often harmful to ourselves and others if not attended to.

When it comes to introvert/extrovert, I actually call BS on it generally, as it seems very situational and more about confidence.

Hmmm.... Word. "There is no guarantee of reaching targets in this life, but there will always be a result from what we do". I should save this somewhere in my subconscious.
This is something to really think about. I should keep asking myself if I'm good at what I do.

but, probably one of the reasons I am good at the jobs I have is because I take jobs that are Suitable for me as a person

I can understand this too. I also love to do what is suitable for me as a person. Rushing into something I'm not comfortable with even if it is financially there is usually a bit difficult.

I thought the 100 word date thing was fun, it was also work, and a good training aid to minimize words, (hard for me to do), but it was fun paring down the original 158 words to just 100 with out losing the flavor I hoped to impart.

instant gratification...

I keep hoping that one day that thought process would go away, that the look at me, give it to me, make me happy, make me rich, mine mine mine, It seems to be getting worse, or perhaps it has always been there and is just now being highlighted by more and more people.

I'm good enough at what I do XD

I'm also okay with not being where I wanted to be by now because it seems that I hate what's associated with getting to where I wanted to be more than I want to be there.

I didn't play partially because I have been getting home late and mostly because I'm a coward and I have a feeling you'd be following anyone I'd suggest anyway.

I'm the type of introvert that has found this online/text stuff brilliant, I wouldn't be cheerfully communicating with nearly as many people in meatspace XD

Good luck with the training. Sounds like you need some Jedi Mind Trickery on the clients x_x

There is insane amount of money in graphic design and logos, but just thinking of logos now makes cringe. I've tried doing some in the past and I just have bad associations with logos xD

I see this kind of mentality often on Hive also, where for example people will react to something that gives an immediate vote of support, but not something that would lead to building support over time in the future.

It's certainly tempting, but my personality simply won't allow me to do something I don't feel like xD And lack of self discipline. I guess it's because I'm financially ok and not desperate to earn, so I can afford to draw what I want. In the long run it seems to be paying off anyways :)

"but I am an introvert"

Ohh I'm 100% introvert (still socially awkward occasionally) 😂 I've been planning to make a post on that, the social engagement techniques I learned that help... I've just been more motivated to do other stuff right now :D

I certainly have a lot more to improve to be better, but more importantly faster at what I do :) My biggest issue right now is how slow I am haha.
