Market Friday: children’s games and learning section in a mall.

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by @dswigle. The other week I had a nice walking exercise in a big shopping mall. Most people here would go walking in air-conditioned shopping malls whenever they felt bored or when the weather was getting too hot. Modern shopping malls nowadays tend to be super big and full of all kinds of shops to cater for all customers’ desires. What is interesting is that there would be a special section designed to serve the learning needs or children’s development. Our society has become very competitive, small children would be put into classes to speed up their development and enhance their potentials. This has become a big business as parents would be willing to pay for classes or tuitions that will make their kids more intelligent and successful at schools.

So, there are now so many new businesses offering various classes from singing and dancing, mathematics, Chinese and English languages, golf tuitions for rich kids, personality development and so on. Parents could request for special classes to be tailored made for specific requirements. But I have yet to see classes for blockchain, blogging on Hive or investment in cryptocurrency!

On the fifth floor of this shopping mall, you’ll see a music school offering classes on playing Western musical instruments like piano, violin and drum. There are also shops selling imported games for increasing children’s IQ and intuitions on mathematical skills. These sorts of extra curriculum are rather expensive and beyond the reach of less wealthy families. Presumably children who have been drilled with these extra tuitions would do very well at schools and get a head start in academic achievement as they grow up.

We never had any of these educational toys or intelligence enhancement tuitions when we were kids. These businesses were non-existent in the old days of easy going and care free lifestyle. Nowadays, students have to compete for top marks on order to get into top colleges and universities. Students have to work very hard at memorising textbooks and cramming lots of useless information into their heads just before exams. I was so glad that we had it quite easy in the old days.

However, I have to say that our education system is more of a failure than a success in terms of actually fulfilling the original purpose of education. Young people are deeply insecure about their future in terms of employment and successful career. I was invited to share my working experience with some kids a long time ago; I did ask them whether they were confident that the knowledge they learned would afford a secured career which could support them till they were old. No single person thought they would survive the changes and uncertainty of the future. I was flabbergasted; I knew straightaway that our education system failed almost completely. I was very sad but I could not do anything. Education, politics and corruption are all mingled together.

We were very lucky that our parents knew some foreign expats in Bangkok so we had extra English tuition at home for a year. That was good fun and started making me very keen on learning English at a very young age. Middle class and rich children do fair better at schools as they usually have private tuitions on several subjects and they often have English summer camps abroad. During my school years, I discovered that my English was much better than all the local teachers as they never had private tuition. Most local English teachers in public schools do not have the chance to study abroad.

I do wonder whether children who have gone through a series of private tuition on sets of extra skills actually turn out to be successful in their career. These children would probably be sent abroad by their parents on summer camps too. So they would get high marks in English subjects. But I wonder about their human quality whether they are compassionate and kind to those classmates who appear to be less fortunate and underprivileged.

From my own experience with my distant relatives who have been to English colleges and universities; I must say I have been deeply disappointed. Although they did very well academically and got well paid jobs; these young people turned out to be like efficient robot-workers. They were not interested in reading books outside their curriculums especially old published books on local history and literature. Their spiritual development seemed to have be neglected by their families too. Modern people focus solely on materialistic success and achievement. This would leave their children very vulnerable and brittle when confronting major obstacles or failure in their life.

So, looking at all the modern games, tuition and coaching, special techniques for increasing IQ; I could not help having some apprehension that lopsided development will lead to calamity in the end. These people are stuck in the old paradigm of technological reality. They have no awareness about AI, robotics or blockchain. The global system is going under the ‘great reset’.

This evening I had a chance encounter with a staff of a well known political administrator in a coffee shop. Our conversation and debate left me feeling rather hopeless and helpless about the impact of global changes in the near future. I will have to start praying much harder and keeping silence vigil more often. We need Divine intervention in times of extreme danger and disequilibrium.

เราไปเดินเล่นที่ห้างสรรพสินค้าในวันที่อากาศร้อนอบอ้าว เราไปเดินดูโซนที่มีของเล่นสำหรับเด็ก และมีโรงเรียนสอนพิเศษสำหรับเด็กที่เป็นลูกคนชั้นกลาง และคนรวยมีเงินส่งเสริมลูกให้เรียนพิเศษในวันหยุดสุดสัปดาห์ เราทึ่งมากเพราะสมัยก่อนตอนเราเป็นเด็ก เราไม่เคยเห็นโรงเรียนแบบนี้มาก่อน เด็กสามารถเรียนการเล่นเครื่องดนตรีตะวันตก อย่างเปียนโน ไวโอลินและกลอง นอกจากนี้ยังมีการเรียนการคิดเลขอย่างรวดเร็ว การพัฒนาการด้านสมองเพื่อเพิ่มไอคิว เราโชคดีมากที่ไม่เคยต้องโดนจับไปเรียนพิเศษเหมือนเด็กสมัยนี้ เรามีเวลาวิ่งเล่นกับเพื่อนๆในบริเวณบ้าน และได้ผจญภัยไปในที่ต่างๆในถื่นที่เราอยู่ด้วย

โชคดีที่บ้านมีคนรู้จักชาวต่างชาติที่ทำงานในเมืองไทย ทางบ้านจึงเขิญเขามาช่วยสินภาษาอังกฤษพวกเราตอนเด็กๆ พวกเราเรียนกันอยู่หลายเดือน เรียนแบบเล่นๆสนุกๆ ซึ่งทำให้เราไม่กลัวภาษาอังกฤษ แต่กบับชอบมากกว่าเรียนภาษาไทยเสียอีก คนสอนภาษาไทยสอนได้น่าเบื่อมากจนเราแอบหลับไปเลย เราเอวไม่แน่ใจว่าการให้เด็กไปเรียนพิเศษ จนไม่มีเวลาของตนเองจะมีผลเสียต่อเด็กบ้างไหม แต่เราต้องยอมรับว่าการได้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษก่อนเพื่อนในชั้นเรียน ทำให้เราได้เปรียบคนอื่นมาก เราก้าวหน้าเร็วกว่าคนอื่นมาก และทำให้เราตั้งเป้าไปเรียนหนังสือเมืองนอกให้เร็วที่สุด เพราะเบื่อการเรียนภาษาไทยมาก

สำหรับเด็กรุ่นใหม่ที่เรียนพิเศษมากมาย คงได้เปรียบคนที่ไม่มีเงินจ่ายค่าเรียนพิเศษ แต่เราคิดว่าระบบการศึกษาของไทยส่วนใหญ่ล้มเหลว เพราะไม่สามารถบรรลุวัตถุประสงค์ของการศึกษาตามเป้าหมาย เด็กจบมาเหมือนไม่มีวุฒิภาวะ เพราะเรียนแต่ตำราอย่างเดียว และเล่นท่องจำเป็นส่วนมาก ทำให้คิดวิเคราะห์เองไม่เป็น แถมอ่านแต่ตำราอย่างเดียว ทำให้ไม่มีความรู้รอบตัว และความคิดแคบไป นอกจากนี้ก็ไมได้ศึกษาพุทธศาสนากันเลย ไม่มีใครหาหนังสือของท่านพุทธทาสหรือ พระที่มีอภิญญาสูงๆมาอ่านกันเลย

เด็กสมัยนี้จึงเก่งแต่ตำรา นอกตำราก็จอดสนิท ไม่มีความรู้ด้านประวัติศาสตร์และวรรณคดีเลย ทำให้มุมมองชีวิตแคบ และเปราะบาง ถ้าต้องเจอความผิดหวัง อุปสรรคใหญ่ๆ หรือความผิดหวัง และความล้มเหลวในชีวิต เราคิดว่าพวกเขาคงแทบเอาตัวไม่รอดแน่นอน เมื่อไรหนอ ที่การศึกษาของไทยจะมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างดีมากๆสักที รนไทยรุชจะได้ช่วยพาประเทศให้รอดพ้นจากวิกฤตการณ์ในอนาคตได้
