PowerHouseCreatives Contest - Places I Would Go - Beautiful Greece

avatar

Hello friends! With our lock-down life, many of us are feeling stir-crazy and cooped up like chickens with the foxes all around trying to break in. So it's wonderful to daydream about where we might go if we had complete freedom once again! Thanks to this week's PowerHouseCreatives contest by @zord189, we can share our dreams!

Greek Islands

I have traveled to many wonderful places in the world, and this is one I dream of returning to. I have not been to Greece since college, when I spent six months there, traveling to major cities like Athens and Thessoloniki, as well as to beautiful places like Meteora and of course the islands. I have yearned to go back ever since!

Images like this one help to give a sense of how charming and magical the coastal villages are.

The whitewashed homes and stucco churches are so brilliant and fresh-looking. You cannot help but be swept away by their simple elegance.

Of course I want to return to Athens, and to see the Parthenon on the Acropolis again. It is one of the most stunning pieces of architecture, and fortunately they are continually working to preserve it from completely crumbling due to the elements and polution.

One of the most stunning places I visited when I was in Greece, and would love to visit again, is Meteora - so named because the enormous rocks upon which monasteries are built were believed to be meteorites.

Here's an article on Meteora if you would like to read about this amazing place. A brief quote: "Studies suggest that the pinnacles were formed about 60 million years ago during the Tertiary Period. Weathering and earthquakes then shaped them into their present shape."

I also crave revisiting the tiny villages, cafes and tavernas of Greece. The Greek people are kind and hospitable, and it is so wonderful to sit at a cafe and drink a glass of retsina (resin wine) or ouzo! Opa!

I can almost smell the aroma of roasting lamb, the peculiar and delightful aroma of the retsina and the lemon, olives and herbs that accompany every meal!

And finally, I would love to return to the island of Crete, where I once stayed with a host family on an olive farm, and helped with the harvest. Each day we would go out to the farm and climb ladders and use small hand rakes to pull the olives down onto burlap, where we would then gather it up into sacks and load it onto donkeys. I am sure I could never find the same farm again. It has been too many years. But I will always remember the delicious meals my host mother made every night, the amazing bread baked in her outdoor brick oven, and how for that short time she was my mama.

I leave you with a humorous meme. I can't remember where I found it or who sent it to me, so unfortunately I cannot provide a source, which I suppose is common for memes. But it makes me laugh! I hope it makes you smile too.

I recently talked to my best friend about this being one of the places we want to go before we die, it's definitely beautiful, very good choice! Stay safe!

Oh yes, it is an excellent "bucket list" item! I hope you get to go, @fmbs25.

Greece is on my list because I just want to contextualize, in some weird way, even if it would be anachronistic, my obsession with Plato's work.

I love how you phrased that, @deadsparrow. Oh yes, you can definitely bask in the intensity of thought resonating among the ruins. Especially after a few glasses of retsina.

It's basically next door, except during special periods. I planned this for late summer or mid-autumn but we shall see. Maybe plans will have to change.

Well, the plan was no more than a "Let's go back to Greece again" for now, nothing complicated ;)

I think I'll probably do some car travel this summer, but nothing requiring air travel or public transportation. I'm not going to want to risk anything too soon!

Greece, yes a nice place to go. Been there many years ago and this memories need a refresh.

BUT what will be this summer travel plan - where can we go? When can we travel. I plan more or less to stay home and maybe have a pool here..... sure, not for diving...

Those are certainly the looming questions. I'm not sure it will be fully safe all summer! I do hope so. Good to see you, @detlev!

Meteora and Santorini are really beautiful from what I have seen and read. I have them on my bucket list as well.

I can see why you'd want to visit Greece again, I've never been there! The azure ocean and whitewashed buildings look picture perfect, reminds me of the movie Mama Mia! Meteora is a fascinating place indeed!
Love the meme at the end by the way:)

Yes, the movie Mamma Mia (and it’s sequel) does a great job of capturing the beauty of Greece. But you really need to go! I hope we can all plan travel again before too long.
