FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY | Have you tried Vú Sữa or best known as Breast Milk Fruit ?

I came across this very unique fruit in Saigon two weeks back and I've been wanting to share this ever since. But, before I tell you all about it, let's have a bit of history class first.

History

It has numerous common names including tar apple, star apple, purple star apple, golden leaf tree, milk fruit but the best is the Vietnamese name Vú Sữa (literally : Breast Milk fruit).

I've never seen this fruit before in my entire life so I wasn't sure what to expect or how to even eat it. Thanks to my colleagues who bought 4 pieces for me to try. It's hard on the outside and the best way to eat it is by massaging the fruit as if one were to massage ones breast 😉. Oh yes, I thought my colleague was playing a prank joke at me but it is really true. The massage actually softens the shell and the flesh becomes partially soft. Once fully massaged, the fruit will be cut into half. Using a teaspoon, one will scoop out the white flesh to eat.

The flesh taste partially sweet and milky at the same time. Best enjoyed when chilled and is said to have antioxidant properties. As you can see, it comes in two colours dark purple or greenish yellow. The purple fruit has a denser skin and texture while the greenish yellow has a thin skin and more liquid pulp. I was told the purple one doesn't taste as sweet as the greenish yellow ones.

It so happened that I saw several stalls selling this fruit a week ago and decided to stop by the road side to buy some back home. 1 KG cost VND45,000; a bit on the high side since it's not in season yet. It is indeed an experience to try this unique fruit but I sure wouldn't put it in my list of favourite or must eat fruit. The texture and taste a bit odd if you know what I mean 😆 Though I do wonder if by eating this fruit makes the ladies boobs big 🤔

I'll definitely share more in my next post. Hope you enjoy my photo taken from my Huawei
