Greetings, everyone
This is my entry to #WeekendFreewrite organized by @mariannewest. Prompts in bold italics. I limited the development of the story to the five minutes per prompt.

Shooting Arrows

It is crazy to start a porcupine farm in your backyard, but that will give you an idea of how crazy things got over there.

They had eaten up all edible animals around, including some that they thought only barbarians would eat. It would be pointless to get into the details. Suffice it to say that there were people raising vultures, armadillos, and a guy over the hill had successfully crossbred cockroaches and centipedes.

Porcupines seemed at some point the last possible option available. As a matter of fact, they did not even have porcupines in that region. They probably migrated from their natural habitats after people started going after them.

He dialed the number of the police substation from memory. Officer Claire was on vacation. At least that’s what he was told. It sounded crazy; as crazy as saying she was in the bank cashing a check. Nobody takes vacations anymore, just in the same way nobody uses checks anymore. It was a pity. Officer Claire was both very professional and very attractive. He felt very closed to her after she took care of several of his calls denouncing marauders in his farm.

After porcupines proved to be healthy and profitable, his backyard had become the object of constant trespassing. He thought for a moment he might be overreacting to some inconsequential noise, but that’s what one of the neighbors thought last time and he lost a whole truck load of armadillos. With the recent power outrages most places were pitch dark at night. He could not afford to be careless. Vandals had no scruples these days.

They did not call it “the fall of man” for nothing. It was more of a re-fall, if you ask me. Scarcity of food followed the scarcity of anything civilized. It was like going back in time to the old wild west. Only those able to defend their properties will survive, she had told him. Law enforcement agents, especially women, had a hard time enforcing their authority. Officer Claire was exceptional. Not only was she respected, she was feared.

She would rather kill the wrong person than risk being abused or mocked. He did not mind being rescued by a woman and he had the feeling that she liked that about him. She advised him to get a weapon, though.

A ball crashed through the window.
These guys have gone too far this time, he thought. He pulled out the gun he had recently acquired. He knew he’d not get police support this time. The officer who processed his call seemed more interested in talking the female voice he heard in the background than sending any patrol to check on some noise in a porcupine farm.

He stuck his weapon out of the very same hole the missile had left opened and was ready to shoot at the first provocation.

He heard another bang, but this time it hit the wall.

I’m warning you, he yelled. I have a gun and I know how to use it.

Don’t be an idiot, a voice from the dark yard warned. Come out and play with me before your stupid porcupines get me first.

He recognized that voice. It was Claire. He looked around the floor and saw the missile that had crashed through the window: a baseball ball. You call this a vacation? He yelled back.

Hahaha. Thanks for stopping by, @jaynie. This was a tough one. I was about to quit writing after I read the second prompt. By the third prompt it was not making much sense, but I figured what does? It started with a crazy porcupine farm, for christ's sake :)
