Handy - (PowerHouseCreatives Contest) – The World In Our Hands

Handy

text16.png

How did the word “handy” originate, I wonder. When we say things like, “This is a handy thing to have,” or “It’s handy to have one of these around,” why didn’t we use the word “useful” instead? Useful probably existed before handy did, I’m guessing. And don’t forget “helpful.”

Our hands are useful. They’re also handy. But many other parts of our body are both useful and handy. I wonder if humans had pinchers instead of hands, would the word “handy” still exist? There doesn’t really seem to be a logical reasoning suggesting “handy” is derived from “hand.”

If someone is touching us inappropriately, we might say they’re “feely.” When we hear the word “feely” we immediately think of grossness and hands doing disgusting things they shouldn’t be doing. We don’t have feelers though. Some insects, (both land and marine), have feelers however.

I think feely is derived from feelers, because thinking about insects’ feelers is kind of gross. But hand and the meaning of handy don’t jive, except for the time some jerk, who once changed the name of walkie-talkies to handy-talkies, had his fifteen seconds of fame.

Our hands. It’s pretty hard to do stuff without them, but many people who were born without them or lost them somehow, have made their feet their replacement “hands.” I’m grateful for my hands.

The cover picture for this post is something I painted with my hands several years ago. It’s an awful painting, but my drawing is even worse, if you can believe that.

For a backdrop for my display of hands photo, I chose to use a couple of my several old jerseys from my days of playing sports. The “Bomb Squad” jersey is from around 2002. I played shortstop on the team of my employer. We made explosive-detecting X-Ray scanners so airport baggage inspectors can see them without opening the bag.

Hence, "Bomb Squad."

I was part of a team designing and writing software for producing 3D images of a detected object inside baggage, which relied on several types of threats and algorithms to detect the objects.

The inspector could rotate the detected image in 3D to look at every part and every angle of it and determine if it's really a threat or not. If undecided, the inspector could have the bag removed from the conveyor and inspect it manually by opening the bag.

The number 40 jersey goes way back to the eighties, when I first played on a flag-football team in a city league. I played flag-football a lot. In ‘96 I got the trophy.

I also wore the number 40 when I played regular tackle football in high school.

The most use my hands get these days, has got to be when I’m typing. I’ve typed more in the past two years than I ever had before I joined steemit, and I’ve improved my typing skills a lot in that time.

I’ve built many models with my hands and I was quite good at it.

Just look at this Clipper Ship that I built.

Just kidding. I didn’t build that beauty… Someone threw it away, I couldn’t believe it, and so I snatched it up. I’ve had it for around twenty-five years now.

Finally, there’s one last thing I do with my hands, (fingers mostly), that I can add here, I think.

I practice guitar daily. That’s not to suggest I’m getting any better, but it’s something I do with my hands, and my hands can be seen.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about, and seeing my hands.

When I was i elementary school, there was a boy with only one arm, and he was made fun of for his artificial arm. I always thought about how he must feel, with his handicap and knowing the other kids made jokes about him. It's sad.

Very nice @free-reign, I see you are quite Handy as well (Groans) ha ha ha
I too play guitar, I used to be quite good, but alas I hardly ever have need to play it now (them, I have an Ovation knock off, a Fender Squire and a $52 Kmart "Vinci" to which I added a $35 "in hole" Duncan pick up, I play that one more often that the others, although....This image is about 3 yrs old)

I don't have an acoustic yet. The white one is a Yamaha SE 150, and I also have an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. and I have a midi guitar as well as several keyboards. I get my music down with Guitar Pro 7.

Wow! Can you (or would you) give me some info on the midi guitar? It's been several years, but the last I looked into it, that was impossible.
There were attachments that could be attached to the front of a guitar that would allow you to add midi effects and other instruments, but I want a guitar upon which I can play and record the guitar as a midi file.
Is that what you mean @free-reign?
btw... (I have two working keyboards, two (small) working PA systems as well, and a small CRATE practice guitar amp)

The one I have, I bought around 2012 I believe. It's called a YouRock guitar (name of the company), but they seem to have gone out of business. Here is a pic of mine:

But there are others now, probably better, on Amazon for one place, and any music store probably sell them too. Check this one out: https://www.amazon.com/Jammy-Guitar-App-Enabled-Controller-Detachable/dp/B07RT68X8F/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Midi+Guitar&qid=1583140289&sr=8-4

I don't know if it works like the YouRock, which I paid I think $230 for. This one is $479

These are the MIDI guitars you mentioned? If so, I will most DEFINITELY look into them
Thanks @free-reign

I have a new customer at work and went onsite a couple weeks ago to meet them. As I often do, when introduced to a new person, I repeat their name to (try to) remember it and offer a hand for a handshake. One fellow offered his left in return, and I realised he has no right hand! I remember being initially embarrased, but I wasn't exactly sure why - I think I felt like I had engaged in some sort of social faux pas, and I actually had to think about it and tell myself that no one did anything wrong, it's just odd to come across a person missing a body part.

He's a really nice fellow, too, and has helped me a lot these last two weeks in getting acquainted.

I have had similar encounters and I know how you felt. But like you said, no one is doing anything wrong. It's just how things are, even though there's an adjustment that won't go unnoticed. It's life, which is sometimes flawed. Thanks for revealing that story!

Hola @free-reign. Hands are useful and practical, necessary in practical and useful work.

Oh, don't I know it! :) If I lost either or both of my hands, I would be lost. I'd hope that eventually I'd accept my plight and get some prosthetic hands if I could, or go for getting my feet to do some of my hand things, but it would be devastating to lose them.

Never thought about it! Cool exploration of hands and the word handy.

Thanks for reading my hands story, and yeah; I don't really get how the word handy came into being, knowing what the word means. It's pretty strange I think! 😂

H-m-m! Handy eh! I would relate it to my hands with something like having it in reach (to grab with your hands).
You've done many things with those hands!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reading my post. I think you have something there. Some item we can grab with our hand and that's within our reach when needed, could indeed make the item a "handy" thing.

It is so cool to see in how many perspectives hands are being depicted for this contest. Great post!
