A Walk through the National Cathedral

ww13.jpg

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, is commonly known as Washington National Cathedral. It is a Cathedral in the Episcopal Church. It is located at 3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016

Construction began September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt, and a crowd of 20,000 people. Eighty-three years later, in 1990, the "final finial" was placed in the audience of President George H. W. Bush. On December 5, 2018, his funeral was held there.

I actually never knew that it was christened by another name until I was looking for dates. It is almost ridiculous because I go there all the time.

It is always and forever a pleasure to spend some time with some of my favorite people as we share our walks with each other. The idea is to get out for a short walk and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start. This will be my entry for #WednesdayWalk with @Tattoodjay. You can find his entry and an explanation of the rules suggestions for the challenge. You will find it here I will be taking my walk around the National Cathedral today. Oh, come on! Walk like an Episcopalian. You know you want to.

WW4.jpg

The entire building was constructed in 14th century English Gothic. There are three chapels in the crypt which are 13th century Gothic, Norman, and a blending of the two. A slight hint of Spanish gothic on the south portal, and a show of 15th-century fan vaulting in one of the chapels. It is distinctive and a true architectural delight.

Making something out of nothing can be an emotion, artistic, religious, scientific, mathematical or a station in your life...it can be something awesome or show the trivial in human nature. Be all you can be.

This is a frieze over the West Doorway of the Washington National Cathedral named Ex Nihilo, which translates as “out of nothing,” this carving dramatically shows life emerging from the void. Partially formed figures of men and women seem to be emerging from the swirling background — at Washington National Cathedral.

I love this window. There is something so beautiful in the fragmented art of stain glass. Did you know there are 215 stained glass windows in the Cathedral.

text16.png

The stained glass has always been a challenge for me to photograph. There are no flash and no tripods allowed. Some places, no cameras allowed. It is a very dark church overall. Always the most incredible that you are not able to photograph.

WW11.jpg

Elevator or stairs, you can make it to the top where you can view the opposite tower from the window. This is my view from the 7th floor. Tower to tower.

ww10.jpg

There are 112 gargoyles hanging out on the Cathedral. Let's climb up to the seventh floor and peek out the window. It gives me the best view of them.

WW8.jpg

Did you know that they have a gargoyle on the West Tower of the Catherdral that is carved to look like Darth Vader? That is the rumor. The Cathedral held a nationwide contest for a design. Next time you go there, see if you can spot the Darth Vader gargoyle. Hint: Look high on the northwest tower.

WW6.jpg

There are over 220 people interred inside the Cathedral. One of note is President Woodrow Wilson. Hellen Keller is also buried here.

WW1.jpg

There are 288 angels atop the two west towers. Honest. If you don't believe me, you can count them. Good luck!

WW2.jpg

Washington National Cathedral is the sixth-largest cathedral in the world and the second-largest in the United States. Do you know the largest cathedral in the United States? The largest goes to Saint John the Divine in New York City.

WW6.jpg

The Space Window on the south aisle of the Cathedral contains a piece of lunar rock. Truth. It is a stained glass window that has been nicknamed as such. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins presented a seven-gram sample from the lunar Sea of Tranquility, five years after the landing after it was donated by the NASA director. President Nixon authorized the gift of the lunar rock, which is encased in an air-tight, nitrogen-filled capsule in the window.

ww12.jpg

The Cathedral’s central tower is the only place in North America to house both peal and carillon bells.

A "ring of bells" is the name bell ringers give to a set of bells hung for English full-circle ringing. The term "peal of bells" is often used, though peal also refers to a change ringing performance of more than about 5,000 changes. ... A set of bells rung in this manner can be made to strike in different sequences. source

A carillon is a musical instrument consisting of at least 23 cast bronze bells that are precisely tuned and arranged in chromatic progression so that music in any key can be played. Unlike other types of bells, carillon bells are fixed in a frame—the bells do not move. source

Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Thank you! That is so kind of you. Washington, DC is a fun town to live near with much to do. Honestly, though. I love roaming through the countryside equally as well. The best of both worlds, in most ways.

Thank you for coming for the walk with me. I promise to get better pictures next time!

Have a great day!

@dswigle Than you are lucky you have both. I would feel stressed in a city like that. I never had that but the older I get the more I need my space. It will not be forever since here are no services. I doubt any doctor or ambulance can find me/the address.
Happy day. ❤️

I remember not many years ago that it suffered from earthquake damage. They also added lightning rods... A Franklin invention I might add.

Walk like an Episcopalian... Now that is funny right there!

It did, and devastatingly so. It was an earthquake that I felt, although many didn't. Having lived in California for a brief blink, my body reacted immediately. I actually was surprised at the damage. At least to me.

Walk like an Episcopalian? Yes! It is the easiest way to get about there. :)

I need to go back and get better pictures. I already had this planned in my head - so I used what I had. Thank God for 'ole Ben, right? He and those lightning rods dot the architecture here. :)

Have yourself a wonderful day and let the sunshine and happiness shine down on you.

Wow what an impressive cathedral and post I don’t think I saw it when I visited there so many gargoyles and angels

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)

Perhaps not, if you weren't looking for it. It is off of Embassy Row (where all the Embassies are) and off the beaten path. The nearest Metro is Tenleytown and if I am not mistaken, Woodley Park from the other direction. They are both on the red line and at least a mile and a half walk or Uber.

It is amazing in person and these pictures were a total bomb, but I should have dug out older ones. :)

Happy Wednesday Walk! And OMG! I forgot to thank you for the generous tip you gave me last week~ Shame on me! I kept meaning to and it slipped. Boo me!

All the men in their robes do the same dance, don’t you know.

They like to build, woah-oh-oh, big round colored wi-indows.

Walk like an Episcopalian. 🎶

Ex Nihilo .. My favorite part of this awesome walk through. How big would you say this is? Quite the sculpture isn't it? I could stare at it for a good while due to all of those details. Before embarking on a challenging project such as that, I would ask myself, "Brad, Where shall I start?".. I guess I would start from nothing! hehe. Impressive. Love stained glass in old churches. How cool would it have been to be involved with a project like that. Thanks for the tour! Now I don't have to go for myself.. not.. haha. See ya around! :-)

It is two stories tall and I should have posted a picture of the front. It is over 20 feet wide and is just such an incredible piece. They had it commissioned and it made it's debut in 1982, so a fairly new piece by artwork standards. I have found myself doing that exact thing, staring at it, so an emotionally charged piece to me.

Stained glass is gorgeous, sometimes so gorgeous, it looks fake. They are still rebuilding (and paying for it, brick by brick) from the earthquake we had over four years ago, rocking the Cathedral. It was made stable over a few months' time and is still in the process of renovating the places that need it.

I personally am all thumbs when it comes to artwork, although, I am a huge admirer of it. Thanks for stopping by and saying hello, leaving those words behind!

Have a great day!

Interesting facts about this cathedral, my favorite to look at are gargoyles and stain glass windows. Not that everything else is not off the top shelf, the two mentioned always intrigue and amaze, my eyes can't stop wondering....

These were really terrible pictures and it was too late to swap it out. I had already committed to it, but, I will have to dig out more or go back maybe next week. I had dropped a lens and was not happy anyway. Well, it was my fault, so there is that. :)

I love going there, but, so many places there are no cameras allowed and I really needed the one for low light... Oh, would have been, could have been, yes? Such cheap lessons.

I do love stain glass and gargoyles too. When I spotted Darth Vader the first time, I was both appalled and delighted! How cool was that?

Well, I always thank you for taking the time to read and then leave an outstanding comment behind. I thank you for that and I can say that I always look forward to what you have to say.

Have a great day!

Pictures give an idea of the beauty, seeing it first hand one always feels a photo does not do full justice.

Not being allowed to photograph many places today is annoying!

Have a wonderful day Denise.

Thank you so much for this beautiful post! I've never seen this cathedral in person - only on tv. Next time I go to DC I want to tour it! It looks so amazing! I simply adore stain glass windows! I so wanted the church I go to in Texas to put in stain glass windows when it was built in 1988, but alas they didn't! The other Episcopal churches I have attended over my lifetime did have stain glass windows- it's the church I grew up in. Side note - The church I attend now changed from Episcopalian to Anglican about 10 years ago.

Thank you!! I didn't use a great camera for this and lacked in the details of the pictures, so when I go back again, I will be taking more pictures and posting them.

I thank you for the thoughtful and generous comment!! Truly. And I hope that you do get there! It is soooo worth it! I love the stained glass in here too!

Thank you again! I hope all is well with you!
