The Importance of Mental and Emotional Days Off!

It's Monday again!

We tend to be predisposed to "hate Mondays," but this post really has nothing to do with Mondays. So if you want to philosophize about the implications of Mondays, go read @jaynie's post from this morning!

Being self-employed, Monday doesn't really mean anything much to me; it's just another day of the week.

That said, I'm feeling listless and unmotivated, this morning.

Sitting with that for a bit, I recognize that I feel mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Rest and Recreation

Human beings are a funny lot. We're quick to recognize when we need to rest because we've run for too long, or have worked in the yard for too long... and we are aided by the fact that aching muscles are telling us we're "overdoing it."

We're not nearly as good at recognizing — and exercising appropriate self-care — mental and emotional and psychological exhaustion.

The temptation is to lump all those together under the broader heading of "stress," maybe meditate for half an hour — or have a couple of stiff drinks (depending on our leanings!) — and then pretend we're good to go again.

But it's generally not that simple, particularly if you've been through a long period of daily grind and stress. It takes a while to recover fully; to become refreshed enough to resume our work.

"Taking a Mental Health Day"

Sometimes people call in to work sick, privately citing that they need to "take a mental health day."

But how often does that really happen, and how often is "taking a mental health day" merely a cover story for trying to catch up with a huge pile of errands and busy work the has been piling up at home.

That is not a day off!

In order to actually get some benefit from those mental health days, you really have to treat them as such. Because if you don't? You're not really doing anything other than the equivalent of moving papers around your desk and labeling it "work."

So, with little further ado, I'm going to take the rest of this day to walk on the beach and meditate and perhaps take some new photos of my beautiful surroundings, to use in future posts. And maybe do a little beach combing.

Thanks for reading, and I wish you a relaxing Monday!

Same here! Being a homemaker... every day is the same for me. Except for Sunday. That may (and it happens so little) be the day that my husband is off work and home with me.

Around here, both my wife and I are self-employed, and she actually tends to consult more clients on the weekends when they are not at their jobs...
