Not the Usual Fare: Backyard Visitor

I am blessed to have a home office that overlooks our back yard... and thus I get to see a lot of the interesting wildlife that passes through here.

Today, this visitor showed up:

Northern Flicker

Of course, we get lots of migratory birds here, many of which I have identified.

What was a bit baffling here was that this looked very much like some kind of woodpecker... except I wasn't really aware of woodpeckers feeding on the ground, particularly the middle of our lawn.

So, turns out that this is called a "Northern Flicker" and it is — in fact — related to woodpeckers.

Getting ready to leave...

I didn't get much of a chance to photograph it before it flew away again... and only through my window, so the image quality is not too great... but I did think it was interesting enough to share.

And I reminded myself that the blockchain is actually a really good place to store these "small events in our lives" as a kind of record.

Closeup... shows the very woodpecker-like shape of its head

I'm not really a "bird watcher," per se, but I do enjoy photographing unusual things outside my window!

I was also reminded that oftentimes great/interesting photographs are as much a matter of chance (and always having your camera ready and nearby!) as they are the actual skill of the photographer. Well, at least with "quick action" shots like this...

Thanks for reading, and have a great night!
