Cloud Formations... and Out of the Loop

I have to admit that I feel a little more out of the loop than usual when I am forced to do all my work on my laptop.

I don't even understand how people can do graphics and text intensive work from a smartphone.

A dramatic but rather ominous winter sky

Of course, it doesn't help that my laptop is both old and underpowered to deal with the "modern" web... I only have it as a backup for when we go on vacation, and I need a place to (a) dump my photos and (b) check my email and (c) do a little writing into a simple text document.

Meanwhile, the local Computer Geekery finally got back to me on the fate of my "main" computer... which turns out to have a failing hard drive (UGH!) and the processor was overheating and shutting itself down because the thermal paste had all but evaporated.

So now I'm looking at about a $400 fix-it bill, which we can't afford... but somehow have to so I can limp along till I can somehow come up with $1000-1200 for a completely new box that I (hopefully!) will be able to get about 10 years of use out of.

Yes, I only change computers about every 8-10 years or so. I'm strictly about utility and being able to get my work done... not about flashy shit screaming hot technology. Historically, I've done pretty well by buying something that's grossly overkill at the time of purchase, which means it takes longer to be outmuscled by the ever-expanding bandwidth-hoggery of the modern web and apps.

It's COLD up there!

I think the computer industry — and certainly the software industry — would prefer we update and upgrade about every 30 minutes. At least, if the frequency with which the message "An update is ready to install" appears in the lower right corner of my screen.

I meant to do some writing today, but got derailed by this and that... and instead went out to our local beach with my camera, so I could get the cobwebs blown out of my head by the 40mph wind that was whipping down from the mountains.

A pretty worn out post...

Yeah, I'm the sort of idiot who goes to the beach when there's a storm and it's 40 degrees (F) outside... because, why not? I like the beach because it's one of the few places on the planet where I can actually hear myself think.

Anyway, one thing led to another, and now "I meant to write something" has turned into this half-past-midnight missive of very little substance.

How about that Bitcoin, then?

I suppose there's no escaping the chatter about Bitcoin having passed the $20,000 mark, at last...

Makes me wish I actually were an investor with money to invest. Alas, I have had to pretty much sell all my Bitcoin to fund this thing called "being alive and living on planet Earth."

Oh well!

Now I just wish out own Hive would "get legs" and get a hike upwards... wonder if the virtual Hive Fest will inject some new enthusiasm?

Thanks for reading, and here's hoping you have a great weekend!
