STEEM Barometer

avatar

I have spent the better part of this morning trying to get some inspiration for a post. Where I live in the Winter months things slow down pretty significantly. Travel doesn't happen as much and while the weeks consist of working, the weekends are spent snuggled inside trying to keep warm.

Although still cold, the weather this Winter has been pretty crazy for Michigan. We have been getting much more rain than we normally do because the temperatures have been hovering above the freezing mark more often than below it.

Inevitably, all of this thinking about the weather got me thinking about barometers and the multiple meanings of that word. Here is the definition from Dictionary.com:

ba·rom·e·ter
/bəˈrämədər/
Learn to pronounce
noun
noun: barometer; plural noun: barometers
an instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude.
something which reflects changes in circumstances or opinions.
"furniture is a barometer of changing tastes"

"Something which reflects changes in circumstances or opinions"

I would bet a decent sum of money that definition applies to pretty much all of us concerning what we expected when joining STEEM vs how we feel about it now. I thought about making this a challenge post, but quite honestly, not many people participate in those anymore. Maybe I am just not followed by the right people or I am less of a STEEM influencer than I think :)

Instead, I am going to pose a couple of questions and I'd love to hear what you think. If you want to reply in the comments, that is fine. If you want to go the extra mile and create a post about it, please use the #steembarometer tag.

  • How long have you been on Steem?
  • Did you have a goal in mind when you joined Steem?
  • Are you still on track with that goal?
  • How have your goals shifted?
  • If your goals have shifted, what were some of the driving factors of that?
  • Based on your expertise, faith, or other divination skills, where do you honestly see the overall value/landscape of Steem (knowing that most cryptos are still tethered to BTC feel free to make broad speculations) at the end of 2020?

Let me get the ball rolling...

I have been on Steem just a touch over two years now. When I started the price of Steem was closer to $4.00 USD and I could see it pretty clearly in my head that I could achieve my goal of putting a down payment on a truck with my earnings from Steem. The initial goal was always to build my account so that those passive rewards would eventually be large enough to exchange to fiat.

While I do have a new (to me) truck, I gave up on the idea that Steem could be the means to that end a long time ago. My new goal which I think is pretty reasonable is to hit 10K SP by the end of 2020 and I feel that is a pretty attainable goal. The dream of course is to get a whale that finds your particular brand of writing witty, interesting, informative, etc. I haven't been that lucky yet!

In fact, I think even more than before, it is harder to get the attention of a whale. The majority of them have "disconnected" from Steem to just focus on curation and the majority of that is automated. The most recent hardfork is the driving force behind that and while I feel it was a smart move, I can't help but think how different things might be if it had been implemented sooner. Before the crypto Winter started and droves of people had already left the platform.

In the grand scheme of things, I am a crypto noob. I haven't seen all the ups and downs that some of you seasoned adopters and investors are familiar with. I came in at the high and have been pulverized by the downturn like many others. Many people keep promising this or that is going to be a game changer for crypto but personally, I will believe it when I see it.

I have noticed that when the stocks are up, crypto goes down, when the stocks are down, crypto goes up. I am sure someone much smarter than me has an explanation for that, but I do believe if we see even a hit of recession in the economy it will be smart to be holding some crypto.

In hindsight (which is always clearer), I wish I had held off on purchasing the STEEM I did just a little longer. I believe in it enough that I don't mind investing some money into it, but I could have gotten a much better deal!

Greetings... I find your publication very interesting, so I'll answer some of your questions.

  • I have a year and 4 months at Steemit.
  • I had many goals in mind that couldn't be achieved at the time and Steemit appeared by chance in my life.
  • My professional goals changed logically, but I take them back little by little in the economic possibility.
  • My desire to get back into my personal business is what is driving me to change.
  • If I think that Steem will go up a little bit in price, it always does in the middle of March-July, it always falls with an HF, then it recovers a little bit, but... waiting for it to reach the value that it had before, I have lost faith, it's like thinking that BTC will return to its high values. Anyway, Steem is still profitable and an alternative to present yourself as an artist and to survive the crisis.

Good idea @bozz :)

Some of the topics overlap @theycallmedan's recent initiative and I think I'll go for a post to answer both at the same time if anything, cheers!

I have posted my thoughts. We need to keep talking about the issues as we see them. We each have a different viewpoint and not everyone has the same aims. We have to face up to the issues Steem has.

What a cool idea, I will take the replying in a comment option for now

How long have you been on Steem?
About 2 and a half years

Did you have a goal in mind when you joined Steem?
Not really I was on other platforms and a few friends suggested it and after one shut down more or less overnight I was dubious about a new platform, but ended up giving it a go and love the new friends I have made on here

Are you still on track with that goal?

I didnt really have a goal as such other than to have fun and interact with people, so if thats a goal yes I think I am on track

How have your goals shifted?

Again not having a goal the simple answer would be no, but now that I am a little bigger on the platform than when I started I do enjoy when I can give some away, such as with my WW posts

If your goals have shifted, what were some of the driving factors of that?
I guess I will leave this one intentionally blank

Based on your expertise, faith, or other divination skills, where do you honestly see the overall value/landscape of Steem (knowing that most cryptos are still tethered to BTC feel free to make broad speculations) at the end of 2020?
Even after two years on here I am still a crypto newbie

No problem, I understand. I have tried to do post challenges in the past and got zero responses so that is why I like giving the comment option. It is great that your goals and expectations have remained pretty much unchanged. I think that is a place that a lot of people wish they could be in when it comes to crypto.

Yeah I guess coming in with no expectations makes it easier to enjoy my time on here
And i know what you mean its kind of frustrating when someone starts a tag or challenge and when you join it there is no response

Thats why I make a point of visiting every Wednesday Walk post

I liked this post @bozz. An honest reflection on "the good, the bad, and the ugly" vs. the typical "echo chamber" posts far too common "in here." IMHO, our Steem blockchain needs far more of the type of post you are writing and far less of the type written by "those other guys" ... We'll leave the names out, to protect the guilty ... 😉

As far as my $0.02, I'll think about it, but likely won't invest the time, as one of my "then" versus "now" comments would be the unsustainable time commitment required to have some success "in here" at the expense of far too much left undone "out there" in the "real world." Certainly for this Steemian. I am past that ...

I am more settled now on just enjoying what has always appealed to me the most - engagement with others all over the world. As my time permits ... Everything else? "Icing on the cake" ...

Thanks for the kind words! I hear you. There have been many times i have wondered if this isnt just a huge time suck. I truly value all of the cinnections i have made all over the world but i could do that just as easily in discord. If i cant look back and say this was worth it someday fiscally then what was the point?

Yes @bozz, as I am sure you can imagine ...

"If i cant look back and say this was worth it someday fiscally then what was the point?"

... you are hardly alone in asking this very important question.

As we all continue to shuffle forward, waiting to find out, have a great day! 😊

*I've been on steemit since March of 2018.
*The only goal I had was to write content that people reading would enjoy.
*More than ever.
*They haven't shifted, really. My goal was and is, simple.
*Skipped.
*I think there's potential for steem to increase in value as well as bitcoin, but it's difficult for me to make a prediction, because steem's not why I'm here. The steem is a nice reward, but having this platform to post our creative content is the real prize in my thinking.

Not only did I find an outlet, my participation on this outlet has caused me to experiment with my writing in ways that wouldn't have happened otherwise. It's made me probably a 10 times better writer. So the real value I've picked up here, I'll have for the rest of my life. That's priceless.

Hey @bozz how are you?

• Been hanging around here for more than two years now
• Goal was to earn from blogging and travelling
• Things hasn't been good these past years but in spite of it all goal is just a part of it now. I'm still here because I just simply love creating content win or lose.
• In terms of goals. I used to focus only in photography now I'm exploring video. Let's just say main goal now is learning more about photography and video.
• Driving factor is to improve myself and learn more in the process.
• Future of Steem.... well honestly I don't think about it that much anymore. I was there when Steem reached $7 and SBD to $12. If it happens it happens. The most important part of it is that I am enjoying myself in creating content and I'll be on board all the way.

Very cool! I don't think I could ever get into the creating video content thing, but my hats off to you for giving it a go. I have always been horrible at public speaking so I feel like I do a better job of letting my words speak for me!

Yeah, I don't entirely understand what drives the pricing behind crypto's either. I do somewhat understand a POS crypto like steem - there is supply and demand involved - but a lot of it is still greek to me.

I was struggling for a post yesterday. If I cna get the time today I'll write up a post to answer your questions. Crossing fingers for time!

What a great incentive post to get folks thinking and participating.

I have been on Steemit 2 years this month.

Another platform (TSU) I invested much time in suddenly went dark. Then I saw talk on facebook of this site and all the great things they bought with the crypto.

I came, witnessed the fall of Steem, stayed for the interaction with the fabulous people, many I had connected with before on the previous platform.

Steem will rise again, it always does. 😊

I look forward to that day. Ah, another person here from TSU. That is pretty cool. I think Steem definitely has some good underlying fundamentals that should allow it to prosper.

Great questions. I am in a rush now, I may come back later, but I'll say that in the two years I've been here, hoping to turn Steemit into an important additional income (two years ago it was) I have been so puzzled by yhe price of crypto I dare make no predictions.
I still have faith, otherwise I wouldnot be posting. I love it here and I hope all this effort and patience will pay off soon.

I agree with you, I have faith as well. All we can do right now is build our accounts so that when the turn around does happen we will be in a good position.

Not much to say here, as a very similar situation to @tattoodjay's comment.
Our favorite site folded overnight and we had to carefully step into a new one.
The difference is that everything that I raise will go to the charity that we run and in the meantime I continue to post my love of nature.
Oh! And I joined in June 2017.

Blessings and some good questions here my friend.
