Beyond being motivating or simply beautiful, quotes tell us a lot about a writer's craft, depth, vision and capacity for synthesis, and few to portray our nature as Jorge Luis Borges.
That is why today I bring you some 10 quotes that I had written down in an old notebook, from this historic representative of Latin American and universal literature.
1.- "I do not talk about revenge or forgiveness, forgetting is the only revenge and the only forgiveness."
Here Borges speaks of the weight of time, and how it can have different meanings, depending on the occasion, putting things in their place using oblivion as a tool.
2.- "Defeat has a dignity that victory does not know."
If we think about it a bit we will see that this phrase is full of truth. Victory is ostentatious, exuberant, euphoric, but defeat forces us to appeal to the best of ourselves to stand up and try again, exalting ourselves in the process.
3.- "We all walk towards anonymity, only the mediocre arrive a little earlier."
Oblivion reaches us all. To some before others, but first to those who never achieved anything in life, although this is relative. Not all are interested in transcending, some are interested simply in living, regardless of the importance that their life or achievements have for others.
4.- "Doubt is one of the names of intelligence."
Can you be sure you are right? I doubt it. Recognizing that we may be wrong is a form of intelligence, since it is practically impossible to know everything about something. And this form of intelligence requires a human quality that we should practice more: humility.
5.- "To fall in love is to create a religion whose God is fallible."
When you fall in love, your life revolves around the loved one, he/she becomes our religion, and in a way our god, one as human and full of virtues and defects as we are, a fallible god.
6.- "You have to be careful when choosing your enemies because you end up looking like them"
When we have enemies, to take care of them we are forced to predict their movements, think like them, and sometimes, without realizing it, in effect we end up looking like them without realizing it.
7.- "Friendship doesn't need frequency, love does, but friendship doesn't."
Love implies commitment, reciprocity, constant work, but friendship does not. It seems strange, but if you think about it a bit it's true. You can stop seeing a friend for years, and that doesn't diminish affection. But if we talk about a love relationship, it can die if we do not attend to it for a while. In this sense it is more fragile, although it is a stronger feeling.
8.- "You become great by what you read and not by what you write."
Being a consecrated writer, saying this is a great show of humility on the part of Borges, who puts himself, or puts us on a par with himself, by stating that greatness is in what we read, and what we learn from what we read. we read, something that is available to everyone, regardless of your ability as a writer.
9.- "Literature is nothing but a directed dream."
Everything can exist in dreams. It is a world apart that we all experience but that we can practically never control, and most of the time we forget. In literature, everything can also exist, and it is a world to which we all have access, and in it we can create everything in a conscious way, and not unconsciously, as happens in dreams, and in this sense literature is dreams, worlds, realities , that we build, that we direct.
10.- "Don't speak unless you can improve the silence."
We close this post with this quote that in a way questions the very existence of it. If there is nothing worth saying, it is just better not to say anything. This post provides something better than silence? I don't know, that is up to you, dear reader.
Thank you very much for reading this post and dedicating a moment of your time. Until next time and remember to leave a comment.
