My Five for #thriveonhive by @bengy

"Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success." – Henry Ford

Hive is not simply a blockchain - it is a decision, a mindset and a like minded community that shares in the growth of such.

THE WHAT, WHY, WHO & WHERE OF IT ALL

These are my five...

WHAT

(What Hive offers you as an individual)

HIVE is my daily escape into a place where I can just write about topics, hobbies and ideas that are interesting to me without any fear of judgement by people that I might know in real life. In the years after university, I've never really taken the time to collect my thoughts and write. Now, HIVE gives me the chance to collect my thoughts for half an hour to an hour each day and just let loose with writing.

When you aren't really writing with a deadline or specific purpose in mind, the act of writing can be quite meditative as you follow your train of thought whilst structuring the writing to be easy to read and follow. It is a moment in each day that I look forward to, regardless of whether I'm writing about parenting, gaming, music or just idle thoughts...

WHY

(How Hive is different to other social media and blogging platforms)

I tend to keep away from other social media and blogging platforms as I've found them to be a frustrating mess of "curated" lives. This is further emphasised by the fact that most of the networks on those platforms know each other in real life, which leads to the idea of presenting the best public face possible.

Here on HIVE, I'm blissfully ignorant of the true identities of the accounts that I interact with... I have nothing to do with them in the real life, and I don't think anyone knows me in real life either. So, that gives me the freedom to write and interact without fear of judgement from colleagues or friends.

It means that my feed is also blissfully free of the "humble-bragging" and self-promotion that is so common... especially among the music community. Plus, the inevitable hypocrisy of it all as others point each other out for similar behaviour....

WHO

(People & spaces you find Hive support and gain enthusiasm from)

There are many interesting communities and people on HIVE (#powerhousecreatives being one of them!) and everyone can find a niche that they are interested in... or more likely, several niches. For me, I enjoy the contributions of artists in the #classical-music community (supported by @classical-radio) and the gaming community as well. However, my following feed is an interesting and diverse mix of content from people all around the world... it is always a nice surprise to check in on the feed and discover interesting nuggets of interest or points of view.

Over time, I've found support from various places... my interests are diverse, and so the blogs that I write tend to be quite varied in topic from day to day. Over the length of time that I've been blogging on HIVE, I've been lucky enough to be included on some support lists which means that I generally expect a minimum amount of reward. That sort of expectation weights as a responsibility in my mind... to try and write the quality that these supporters expect of me.

Still... it is always a surprise that I can write and get some reward (however small or big...) from it... and even better, get some audience interaction on posts as well!

WHERE

(The front ends / dapps of your choice and why)

These days, I only use a few dapps related to HIVE. The most useful one is the Peakd (@peakd) interface, which is by far and away the most efficient and powerful of all the blogging interfaces. The ability to draft, save templates and the vast amount of tools available means that it is a constant pleasure to blog... rather than a struggle against technology! Dark theme is always a plus as well!

@splinterlands is the most fun that I have with the HIVE blockchain. It is a well balanced and constructed blockchain game which has avoided the pitfalls of other attempts to bring NFT based gaming to blockchains. Namely, a fast backend (HIVE database) combined with the design of limiting on-chain transactions to minimise the lag on user interactions.

Finally, HiveSigner is one of the essential tools that tie the entire HIVE dapp ecosystem together. Blockchains require a secure way to sign transactions without exposing private keys uneccessarily, and HiveSigner does a decent job of this.

#THRIVEONHIVE

(My final thoughts & conclusion)

I have studiously avoided spreading too much the idea of HIVE amongst friends... I am all too aware that much of the appeal of HIVE lies in the fact that I know no-one here in real life. So, I've found myself in this strange position of wanting to tell people about this amazing experience and the associated communities and people, but trying to keep myself isolated from real life at the same time.

Over time, I have brought a few people to HIVE... but unfortunately, they don't tend to stay. I'm never really sure what the problem is exactly... but the place is quite different to other social platforms, and the rules (both written and unwritten) can be a bit bewildering for newcomers. Coming from a technical and cryptocurrency background, I didn't find the transition difficult, but I can see how it is quite insurmountable for many.

Still, I would always suggest that people persevere... your life is always more interesting than anyone expects. Things that are mundane to one person, are incredibly interesting to others! Don't focus on the rewards, these are things that develop over time... just have perseverence and patience! Most importantly, don't compare yourself to others who either have been around longer... or gotten a lucky break!

Always interesting to read from another persons perspective, sometimes I think we crazy with all the change that has happened, yet here we are, we love this place and the people!

I truly understand what you mean about anonymity. There is something to be said about it, more freedom without the judgment. Truth. I have Facebook if I want to partake in a little self-flagellation.

It is always a pleasure to read you and if there is one thing I really don't like about this platform, it is the way the feed works. I never see you in it and you are soooo quiet. So, I miss you.

#ThriveonHive!!

It is such an awesome initiative! Glad to see you did one! I loved it!

Yes... I read other people's posts, but more recently (last couple of months...) I've had less time to reply properly to posts. I hope to find time again... or at least change up the way that I browse the feed. I have to remember, the best thing that another person can get on their posts is the comments at the end!

I miss so many posts of people because of the time and the way the feed is. I agree with your best thing, for sure!

Oh I get that - HIVE seems to be a space for me, and I don't know if I WANT to share it with friends. Anyway, when I've told them, they don't seem to be interested. More fool them.

And I love how, like you say, it gives you a bit of unwind time - I love writing to just reflect on my day or what I'm going through.. remember the early days when it'd take you AGES to write a post and you'd edit it three hundred times? Now I rarely do that - just whooosh and it's out there.

Seems there are quite a few of us that share that sentiment... I know a handful of friends and family know where my Hive blog is, but because I am rather selective about what I share on traditional social media, I know that few of them see a lot of what I write and I am ok with that :)

Me too. I send them the stuff I am proud of and want them to see, mainly poetry/creative writing, but I don't think they go beyond that. Media overload.

Haha... I never edited because I lazy like that... but I have looked back on my early posts, and they are quite embarrassing as the layout is so horrible and everything seems a bit scattered in style!

Hhaha we all start like that!!!!!! I spend a lot of time 'hinting' at newbies about code :P - I wonder if they hate me..

Really enjoyed your "what" @bengy. I feel very much the same way about "the people in my life" and Hive definitely offers that freedom! A really awesome contribution to this initiative! !tip
