Our orchids

avatar

I will say first of all that I am not really into houseplants, but they can be nice to have around. I have a long history of killing them off. It seems to be a popular thing to give people orchids as gifts and my other half has been given quite a few. She is even less interested in caring for them than I am, but I have done quite well. I found the orchid community via @bdmillergallery.

My mum does love her plants, including orchids. She told me to just let them stand in some water every week or so. I also have some spray feed I use on them. Some of these are several years old and have flowered multiple times. I have no idea what they are called, but maybe someone will know.

I think they are fascinating with their complex flowers and that they survive pretty much on air and water.

This one is pretty much pure white.

White

These are two plants. The rear one just has a single flower out with a couple more coming. With the first one they are in an old wooden plant stand we inherited.

Pinks

These have some pink mottling on the outer petals.

Mottled

This one is a little more gharish. On the right is one that has yet to flower. I cannot remember what the flowers are like.

Spots

I guess we are lucky to have been given a range of varieties. They brighten up the house. We have fairly plain decoration otherwise.

They are all Phalaenopsis orchids. They might have some extra names as some nurseries do register their hybrids.
I really like the last one :)

Ah, moth orchids. Now I know. I think most of those I see in supermarkets are variations of these.

That's the ones :) And yea.. all the supermarket hybrids have those as parents. But with so many crosses on the way they lost the fragrance.
I wish I had one of those species.

Oh What A WONDERFUL collection of Orchid beauties. They DO have a way of brightening up a space and filling a room all on their own. You have some really cool specimens here. I like the one you labeled "mottled". For some strange reason it reminds me of a tropical fish.. but a pink one. Don't know why other than I see something that looks like scales. Either way I dig it!

Thank You so much for contributing a post to the Orchid Lover's Community. It means a lot to me that so many have found the time (aside from their normal posting) to contribute to the community feed.

Awesome Post!! 😁😊😍

Glad you enjoyed them. I'm sure people get obsessed with them, but I am happy enough to just keep them alive.

You cracked me up in the first sentence, "I will say first of all that I am not really into houseplants", hehe why not they are beautiful, and from their liveliness, I can tell someone loves them, I am sorry I do not know why it cracked me up but thank you for the laugh and these beautiful pics :)

Well I don't obsess over them or even read much about them. I just seem to know enough to keep them going.

I have a couple. They have their own feel and sound, but I've not used them too much.

My sister makes these out of river rocks and gems, she hand files them down to be picks, the brown one is petrified wood and we are not sure what the other stone is but its beautiful :)

Maybe do a post in the guitar community about them.

I was given the bottom left one that has quite a sharp point and I bought the Stohn out of interest. I ought to do another video with them.

Wow, it looks like you are doing pretty well there. I would have killed them off long ago! Good for your, they look beautiful. That is awesome that you found this community. @bdmillergallery seems to be a pretty alright fellow :)

They seem pretty tough. With some plants people over-water, but these do not even have soil in the pots to soak it up, just bark.

I've really come to appreciate the beauty of them after following bdmiller's posts for a while now. I really like how they bloom in a row, kind of like tomatoes from the vine.

That's funny you say that. I was thinking this morning, while taking a pic of the white ones, that they sort of look like fruit on the vine.. Great minds think alike, or so they say 😊
