Orchids at the Chatuchak market in Bangkok, กล้วยไม้

Last week my old friend persuaded me to visit Chatuchak market in the evening when evening plants market would be opened till around nine o’ clock. This was the first time I went to a night market where plant growers and nursery owners came from quite a distance to sell their cacti, pot plants, fruit trees and orchids.

I was not used to walking around plants market in the dim light, but the cool evening temperature made it possible for us to cover almost the whole plant market. I was quite surprised to see many teenagers looking at cacti stalls and there were almost fifty cacti vendors.

Then the last section of the market was just full of orchid vendors and all kinds of orchids. My friend has been a keen orchid grower for years so she knew all the long names of popular orchids. I just tagged along behind her and tried to memorise all these strange names. I got confused after visiting about ten vendors’ booths. I would have liked to take more photos of these orchids, but the artificial lighting was not
really suitable as most of the vendors used LED light bulbs. The blue colour and flickering interferes with my old iPhone lens.

However I was able to get some photos of the hanging orchids. There was one vendor who specialized in growing wild orchids. He did a very good job and the prices were quite reasonable. I bought two small shoots from his booth. The big trees in my garden are mostly occupied with several orchids my friend had gifted me last year. The problem will be to find a spot where these new orchids could get the morning sunshine.

สัปดาห์ที่แล้วเราไปงานทำบุญบ้านเพื่อนเก่า ซึ่งเป็นงานที่ดีและรื่นเริงด้วย เป็นงานที่สามารถรวมญาติสนิทมิตรสหายมากันเต็มบ้าน อาหารที่จัดเตรียมไว้เลี้ยงคนก็มีมากมายหลายอย่าง เราชอบขนมจีนน้ำพริกมากที่สุด ยายในบ้านทำตั้งแต่เช้า เรามีเวลาเดินถ่ายรูปต้นไม้และกล้วยไม้ของเพื่อนไปทั่วบ้าน พอเสร็จงานบุญและส่งพระกลับวัดด้วยรถยนต์สองคัน เรากับเพื่อนก็ออกไปเดินเล่นที่ตลาดจตุจักรในตอนเย็น เพื่อนพาเราไปเดินดูตลาดนัดต้นไม้ที่นั่น เราก็พึ่งรู้ว่ามีตลาดขายต้นไม้ราคาไม่แพงที่จตุจักรในตอนกลางคืนด้วย

การไปเดินตลาดช่วงเวลาเย็นนี่ก็ดีเหมือนกัน แดดไม่มีแล้วและมีลมพัดเย็นสบาย ทำให้เดินไปได้เรื่อยโดยไม่รู้สึกเหนื่อย เพื่อนพาเราเดินดูร้านขายกระบองเพชรหลายสิบร้าน เราเห็นพวกวัยรุ่นมาเดินซื้อต้นกระบองเพชรกันเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เราแปลกใจที่คนกันมาเล่นต้นไม้มีหนามและโตช้ากันจนเป็นแฟชั่น เราเห็นร้านขายต้นไม้ไทยๆ และต้นผลไม้ไม่ถึงสิบร้าน อต่ร้านขายกล้วยไม้มีมากเป็นอันดับสอง รองจากร้านขายต้นกระบองเพชร

เพื่อนเราเล่นต้นกล้วยไม้มานานแล้ว เขาจำชื่อต้นกล้วยไม้ได้เกือบหมด เราถามไปเรื่อยและพยายามจำชื่อให้ได้ แต่พอเดินคุยกับคนขายไปสิบร้าน เราเริ่มสับสนและลืมชื่อไปแล้ว ดอกกล้วยไม้สวยไม่มากมาย แต่เราถ่ายรูปไม่ได้ เพราะแสงไฟไม่พอ นี่คือข้อเสียของการไปเดินดูตลาดตอนกลางคืน บางร้านก็ใช้หลอดไฟแอลอีดีที่มีแสงสีฟ้า และแสงกระพริบจนถ่ายรูปไม่ได้ แต่เราก็ถ่ายรูปมาได้บ้าง เพื่อนของเราเลือกต้นกล้วยไม้เล็กๆใก้เราสองต้น เพื่อนเราชอบพวกกล้วยไม้ป่ามาก มันหน้าตาแปลกดี กล้วยไม้สิบกว่าต้นที่บ้านเป็นของขวัญจากเพื่อนคนนี้ เราต้องกลับไปย้ายต้นกล้วยไม้ให้มันได้รับแสงแดดในตอนเช้า เราจะได้มีดอกกล้วยไม้สวยๆตามต้นไม้ในหน้าหนาวปีหน้า เพื่อนของเราได้ให้ความรู้เรื่องต้นไม้แก่เรามาก และช่วยไปเลือกซื้อต้นไม้ให้เราหลายอย่าง ในอนาคตสวนของเราก็จะมีผลไม้หลายชนิด และดอกกล้วยไม้ด้วย

These small shoots are very cheap; you could get three small shoots for one dollar. Wild orchids would normally bloom once a year. So, I have to learn to be patient and know how to wait. I think growing orchids could help improve my personality and slow my pace down a little. My life seems to be under constant pressure of catching up with time and schedule. Orchids will make me enjoy life in the moment instead of rushing to the next urgent task. Slow life, please come to me!
