In the occupied West Bank on Sunday, Palestinian militants opened fire on a bus transporting a group of Israeli soldiers, injuring five of them, one badly, as well as the civilian bus driver, according to the Israeli military. The attack was carried out, according to the Israeli military, by three assailants riding in a pickup truck. They allegedly drove past the bus, tossed explosives at it, obstructed it, and then started shooting with automatic guns. The military claimed that the soldiers on board then exchanged fire.

The pickup truck departed, but later caught fire. According to a military spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, two of the attackers were apprehended and transferred to an Israeli hospital with severe burns. The third assailant is still evading capture. Hecht speculated that the flammable items the assailants were carrying may have contributed to the fire, while the exact reason is still unknown.

In addition to being bold, Hecht described the incident as "very uncommon," noting that it occurred in the Jordan Valley, a typically peaceful area of the West Bank.Despite transporting fresh recruits, he claimed that the bus was a civilian vehicle, and it was unclear whether the attackers were aware that there were military inside.According to Hecht, two of the attackers were from the West Bank town of Jenin, where Israeli troops have been conducting nightly arrest raids recently. The third attacker seemed to be an Israeli citizen of Palestinian descent.

The incident happened on Route 90, the primary north-south road that passes through the Jordan Valley in the West Bank. The road is lined with Palestinian towns and villages as well as Israeli settlements.During the Mideast War of 1967, Israel took control of the West Bank and subsequently established numerous settlements there. The majority of the international community views the settlements as illegal and a barrier to reaching an agreement with the Palestinians, who want the area to serve as the foundation of their future state.

The event occurs just days after two Palestinian men were slain by the Israeli army in separate raids in the West Bank, one in the Umm al-Sharayet neighborhood south of Ramallah and al-Bireh and the other in the al-Ain refugee camp in Nablus.

Israeli soldiers have murdered dozens of Palestinians who were purportedly attempting to carry out stabbing or car-ramming attacks. Israeli forces are accused by human rights organizations of killing Palestinians on purpose even when there is no danger to their lives. Panic and much fear in the citizens as lives are on stake and no one knowing not what will become next after this attack.
