[Movie] Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Review [ES - EN]

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a direct sequel to No Way Home, chronicles a period in the life of "Peter Parker/Spider-Man" as he clings to his heroic deeds on the streets of New York to fill the void left by the difficult decision he had to make—which, according to him, was to save his friends. His long career as a hero will lead him to undergo major changes that will affect his performance when facing an enemy who will be difficult to catch, but with the help of an antihero, he will be able to not only save his city but also find a new reason to keep going.

There was a significant change in direction for this film, with Destin Daniel Cretton chosen to join Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who once again handled the screenplay. Cretton’s work was excellent; this must be the most dynamic Spider-Man film I’ve ever seen, and that was exactly what I expected from this director, who, I should note, also did a great job with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). The swinging scenes and fight sequences are quite fun—all of them entertaining. I think it’s a strength of this director’s to know how to make the most of the entire budget, CGI, and other elements to create great fight scenes, as well as many other shots that pay homage to the original source material from which this hero comes. I think having him at the helm was a great move.

I thought the script was quite well-written; it really felt influenced by a certain story arc from the Spider-Man comics. This story really focuses on how grief can be a heavy burden to bear if you don’t have anyone to lean on for support, which is why the hero must fill that void with his many heroic deeds in his city; that connection to New York was something I really enjoyed and, to be honest, something I’d been really missing, since I personally associate that character so strongly with that place. Another important element is the excellent continuity given to the story, because it’s not just Peter who’s relevant as a character, but his friends as well. There’s no doubt that I really enjoyed that part of the story—I had zero expectations for it, but it turned out to be one of the film’s highlights. Another feature worth highlighting is that, this time around, the hero—or in this case, the antihero—who accompanies Spider-Man worked very well because they complement each other perfectly, both grappling with that moral struggle; I mention this aspect because it’s one I previously didn’t like at all, but this time the relationship between the two is very productive and meaningful to the story.

This is probably the portrayal of Tom Holland that I've liked the most; there's no doubt that this version should show signs of a "Peter" entering adulthood, but I think it's precisely his relationship with his friends that brings him back to that teenager who dreamed of achieving goals with the people who were always there for him. I really liked that version of Peter because it fits the story told in this movie; he’s a young, lonely man grieving a loss, and his escape is putting on his suit, swinging through the city, and catching criminals—he does all that well, but there’s still a lot missing before he can feel like his life is truly in balance. The other characters who accompany him—all the actors—also do a solid job; personally, I liked that “Frank Castle/The Punisher,” played by Jon Bernthal, was chosen to team up with Spider-Man this time around. There’s great chemistry between them, and at times it made this film feel like a “buddy movie”—they work really well together in both the action and comedy scenes.

I thoroughly enjoyed Spider-Man: Brand New Day—I thought it was great, though not perfect—and that’s because of what I consider a requirement: Marvel Studios seems to force directors to include one or more scenes in their productions that serve as a connection to other films within the MCU. That’s why the inclusion of “Bruce Banner/Hulk” is what I liked the least—it didn’t add anything to the story. That said, the action scenes were good, but I don’t think they were all that relevant to the narrative; that’s my main criticism of the movie. I don’t want to wrap up this review without sharing my thoughts on the introduction of an important mutant to the MCU. I think this character’s backstory—and the way both his past and the dangers he faces are portrayed—was excellent, and yes, it got me excited about how not only this character but everything related to mutants will be handled in the future; I just hope they’ll have more creative freedom in their storylines. I have no hesitation in saying that this fourth Spider-Man film is the best comic-book-based movie of 2026.
