CuratorCat.PAL: A Quick Look Back at the First Quarter of 2021

avatar

If I could describe the first quarter for my PAL subaccount, it would be with the word "change."

Originally created with the intention of working as a PalNet curation account, things pretty much changed direction when the PAL community de-emphasized the importance of engagement and curation as a way to earn and use the PAL token.

Just for the record, we're talking about pretty "small potatoes" for me... but I felt it was an experiment worth trying.

Numbers for the Record Books:

This is as much for my own edification as anything:

Started on January 6th 2021 with 3,615 staked PAL tokens.
As of March 31st, 2021 I reached 3,703 staked PAL tokens.

"on paper" I suppose that looks like modestly OK progress... but it's really not.

Changes not Working out for PAL?

The decision to become primarily a "mining" token doesn't look like it is working too well for PalNet.

Following the original announcement of changes, there was a definite upsurge in interest in the PAL token, and it reached over 5c per token at at time when Hive was just under 16 cents.

Sadly, by the end of the 1st Quarter, the PAL token has lost more than 80% of its value while Hive has increased by more than 500%.

That's pretty sad!

Cereal Box Analysis

(1) On a Social site like much of the Hive ecosystem is, a token that has relevance to the social network will appeal to a wide range of users, while a mining coin will appeal only to a small range of users.

(2) When you create something that has little function beyond "well, you can mine it and stake it," you in essence have a commodity that people will want to make and sell because you can't use it for anything. In an open market that's eternally "top heavy on the sell-side, prices have only one way to go: DOWN.

I think that's what we're looking at, here.

Now, there may be other things in the works that I don't know about.

However, judging by the fact that my virtually unchanged stake over the last three months has moved me from 207th to about 190th in the PAL "richlist" suggests to me people are losing interest in PAL.

I hope I'm wrong.

Annoyed? Do I look annoyed? I can't imagine WHY...

Temporary Alternate Strategy: @Brofi

Not sure how long it will last, but in an attempt to salvage at least a little out of this debacle, I decided to delegate the entire 3,700 PAL to @brofi, the DeFi branch of the @brofund organization.

At least the small trickle of BRO Tokens might add up to something!

On the whole, I haven't yet decided whether to just cut my losses and shut this experiment down completely... or just do the wait and see thing till the end of 2021. For the moment, I am leaning towards the latter...

In the meantime, I think I'll just go and curate and interact on Hive proper!

=^..^=
