First Time Light Painting

DSCN7551.JPG

Hello there, LPU, I recently bought a crystal ball and was reading a tip guide on what to do with it. One suggestion was to use it for light painting. So I attempted just that. I don't have a mirror that I can lay on the ground, though so instead I had to use the bathroom mirror on the wall. It worked out pretty well all things considered and I look forward to doing more in the future.

Tools of the trade are a Nikon p900 point and shoot with no special lenses. Aperture set to 8, shutter set to 8 seconds. Crazy 8's! 😜 I have a small 5cm glass ball and some LED's attached to a watch battery. Oh, and a tripod, obviously.

That's actually pretty cool!
I have a 3 inch crystal ball, it might be an interesting experiment. I have to find out how to do it first...

(Edited)

What I did was stack up some boxes so I could have the glass ball touching the mirror and then manually adjusted the focus with the lights of the bathroom on. Set my shutter speed to be open for 8 seconds (it appears this camera opens the shutter 2 times, once every 4 seconds? Cause there's a click noise and if I take my hand away at that click it doesn't show any light trail being removed. But that's irrelevant to you)

Once the camera and glass ball are set up I slipped some LED'S onto a watch battery. Turned the lights off, pressed the shutter button on the camera and then waved the LED'S around, sometimes behind, sometimes infront of the lens.

I was shocked at how dead simple it was and how good the results were for an "I wonder if this will even work" experiment 😁

That's a much better use for a crystal ball than most of those boring fitting the world in a crystal ball Nikon adverts.

Glad to hear you had a win out of your "wonder if this will even work experiment". Those are the best.. looking forward to see more of your LP here.

Nicely done! This is where pretty much every decent lightpainter starts; experimentation to see what works and what doesn't! It's a great way to become a better lightpainter and I hope you enjoy the journey!
