A short message on the dangers of love for material things

True life does not focus on the things we can possess. Biblical teachings lead us to focus on things above and not on things on earth. Earthly life is fleeting and life linked to God has a character of eternity.

The Lord Jesus invites us to put our focus of life on what is eternal and not on the fleeting. Occupying ourselves with material things neither gives life nor provides security, because simply death comes and separates us from all these goods.

Jesus taught it in the parable of the rich fool where he said:

16 He also told them a parable, saying: The inheritance of a rich man had produced much. 17 And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have nowhere to store my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there I will store all my fruits and my goods; 19 and I will say to my soul: Soul, you have many goods in store for many years; Sit back, eat, drink, rejoice. 20 But God said to him: Fool, tonight they come to ask for your soul; And what you have provided, whose will it be? 21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12: 16-21

In this parable the Lord highlights the great dangers of love for material things. The rich man made so many plans with his possessions that he forgot that the one who has control and dominion over life is God.

We must be very clear that possessions neither give life nor offer security, simply because death separates us from them. The foolish man in this parable mistakenly believed that his possessions were really his, not as gifts fruit of God's will to be used generously.

Let us be very careful, with any attachment to material things, because although it is true that God gives us the power to get wealth, he does it simply, so that we can lead a pious and generous life with others.

We must guard against all greed and not put confidence in the goods that we can possess, because the life of man does not consist in the abundance of goods that he possesses, his life, as the Apostle Paul says, is hidden in Christ.
