Extending the lifetime of a digital camera | Corrective maintenance

I have always liked electronics, I enjoy disassembling devices to see their circuits, do maintenance, sometimes I even invent things, some work, others not so much, but I still enjoy it.

Siempre me ha gusta la electrónica, disfruto desarmar aparatos para ver sus circuitos, hacerles mantenimiento, a veces incluso invento cosas, algunas funcionan, otras no tanto, pero igual lo disfruto.

I recently had maintenance done on a Sony CyberShot digital camera that had been presenting a rather uncomfortable little problem when adjusting the settings, because when I pressed the main button that gives access to the configuration menu it did not accept the command or did not save the changes, it simply did not want to do anything. I had the feeling that something was not making contact internally so I dared to uncover it, now I tell you my experience.

Recientemente le hice mantenimiento a una cámara fotográfica digital Sony CyberShot que venía presentando un problemita bastante incómodo al momento de ajustar la configuración, ya que cuando presionaba el botón principal que da acceso al menú de configuración no aceptaba el comando o no guardaba los cambios, simplemente no quería hacer nada. Tuve el presentimiento de que algo no estaba haciendo contacto internamente por lo que me atreví a destaparla, ahora les cuento mi experiencia.

I started by removing both the battery and the memory card, since I didn't need them at that moment, then I proceeded to unscrew the side screws and those at the bottom. Once I finished with the screws, I removed a left side cover to continue with the rear frame, finally and very carefully I managed to access the panel of buttons that help to make adjustments, which is where I really wanted to get to.

Comencé retirando tanto la batería como la tarjeta de memoria, ya que no las necesitaba en ese momento, posteriormente procedí a desentornillar los tornillos laterales y los de la parte inferior. Una vez que terminé con los tornillos, retiré una tapa lateral izquierda para continuar con el marco posterior, por último y con mucho cuidado logré acceder el panel de botones que ayudan a realizar los ajustes, que es donde realmente quería llegar.

This button panel is delicate, held in place by small hooks and connected by a flexible cable at the bottom right, so you have to disconnect it very carefully. To do this you have to be careful and patient.

Este panel de botones es delicado, está sujetado por unos pequeños ganchos y conectado por un cable flexible en la parte inferior derecha, así que hay que desconectar con mucho cuidado. Para hacer esto hay que ser cuidadosos y pacientes.

Already disconnected and in the old way I blew it a little to try to shake the dust, then I applied the contact cleaner, this literally cleans and removes any excess grease or dirt that may be interfering in the effective contact of the components affecting their functionality.

I insist that you have to be cautious with this type of procedure as these are very delicate parts, I waited a few minutes for it to be completely dry, it is supposed to be a fast drying product, but I always prefer to wait a little and be sure.

Ya desconectado y a la vieja usanza lo soplé un poco para tratar de sacudir el polvo, luego le rocié el limpiador de contactos, esto literalmente limpia y elimina cualquier exceso de grasa o suciedad que pueda estar interfiriendo en el contacto efectivo de los componentes afectando su funcionabilidad.

Insisto en que hay que ser cauteloso con este tipo de procedimiento ya que son piezas muy delicadas, esperé algunos minutos que estuviese completamente seco, se supone que es un producto de secado rápido, pero siempre prefiero esperar un poco y estar seguro.

After a while I began to carefully reassemble the camera, reconnecting the flexible cable, adjusting the small hooks and placing the rear frame and screws. It is important to clarify that although I had to disassemble some parts of the camera, this is a somewhat superficial area because from there you do not have access to the heart of the camera where the lens and other vital devices for capturing images are located, do not approach that area unless you have very advanced knowledge because you could damage it irreparably.

Pasado un rato comencé a armar cuidadosamente reconectando el cable flexible, ajustado los pequeños ganchos y colocando el marco posterior y los tornillos. Es importante aclarar que a pesar de que tuve que desarmar algunas partes de la cámara, esta es una zona digamos superficial de alguna manera porque desde allí no se tiene acceso al corazón de la cámara donde se encuentra el lente y demás dispositivos vitales para la captura de imágenes, no se acerquen a esa zona a menos que tengan conocimientos muy avanzados porque podrían dañarla irremediablemente.

I confess that I was a little uncertain about the outcome because I did not know if this would actually solve the problem, although I was confident that it would work.

Les confieso que tenía un poco de incertidumbre con el resultado porque no sabía si esto solucionaría efectivamente el problema, aunque en el fondo tenía la confianza de que funcionaría.

When the moment of truth arrived, I put the battery back in, turned on the camera and immediately tested the operation of the button that gives me access to the configuration to verify if it was responding to my instructions, and yes, it was indeed possible to move between the different menu options, make changes to the default configuration, and save them. Everything was perfect.

Llegado el momento de la verdad, coloqué nuevamente la batería, encendí la cámara y pasé de inmediato a testear el funcionamiento del botón que me da acceso a la configuración para verificar si ya respondía a mis instrucciones, y sí, efectivamente ya era posible moverme entre las distintas opciones del menú, realizar cambios a la configuración predeterminada, y guardarlos. Todo quedó perfecto.

Well friends, do not discard a device or appliance at the first failure, always consider that it may have a solution or improvement that will extend its useful life.

Bueno amigos, no desechen un dispositivo o aparato a la primera ante algún fallo, siempre consideren que puede tener una solución o mejora que alargue su tiempo de vida útil.
