Rescue Update - Pedro The Indian Eagle Owl

On Saturday last my son brought an owlet home when he took the dogs out for a walk at night. We figured that it was an eagle owl which means it is a rarely spotted bird, a raptor predator. It grows to a height of one foot and feeds on vertebrates.

This little guy we found had his wing broken, but we figured that out only after two days since he was not too friendly (didn't expect him to be LOL) We hoped to get a vet to see him but when they heard who their patient would be no one was willing to take chances.

Finally, I took the risk of checking him out myself. What did I find, a bone sticking out of his chest. I also realized then that he couldn't stand properly. A little investigation showed that a kite string was wound tightly around his feet his feet and had cut his leg in several places. It became clear that the kite string was the reason for his broken wing too.

See how his poor little wing sticks out

I have never liked kite flying as I have seen too many birds especially eagles hurt by these shattered glass reinforced strings. I managed to cut the strings out of his legs bit by bit with my son holding the bird. I noticed that his leg was swollen and he hurt badly. He needed immediate medical attention.

I called so many vets and agencies working with rehab of birds, no one responded. Then I chanced upon a news article on my feed it was about a avian and reptile rehab service. Imagine my surprise it was just a block away from where I live. It was 7 in the morning, I still decided to go ahead and call them more surprises awaited me.

The lady who answered my call was very kind, after collecting the information she sent me the directions and asked me to bring the bird in. Pedro as my son had named him is a lucky bird I should say. In ten minutes we were there and after taking a good look at him she promised to send me the reports after the initial investigations were done.

For a very young fledgling Pedro has done well. He survived both the injuries, the stray dogs in the area where he was found. He ate and drank well and seemed to be healthy after all that he had gone through. Now, he would go through a surgery to restore his wings.

Even though I wasn't very happy about my son bringing an owl home I was grateful to him for having rescued this amazing bird and letting him have a chance to live.

It kind of struck me that Pedro was absolutely gentle with me all the while I handled him. He never pecked me even once through that long process of cutting and removing the offending string. He let me pet him and ease him each time I fed him in the time he was with us.

I look back at the whole three days he was with us and see the amount of trust that this raptor predator was able to place in us.

We were sad to say bye to our new friend with whom we developed a strong bond, but we wish for the best. I hope and pray that he would be normal, grow up to be a strong guy and live a normal life.

Everyone should have a chance to life a full life, be it a bird or an insect. Once again this experience taught me the value of life. It is going to hard to kill another insect from now on LOL.

All I can say is I am so grateful for this experience.

Aww this is a really lovely experience your son has made you go through and I can understand when you say you won't hurt an insect from now.

Pedro is a very rare owl, I haven't seen such a specie and it's looking beautiful and healthy but you say it's sick, that's sad.

Thank goodness for the rehab centre close by, you were able to save the poor bird. I believe it would be grateful to you just as you are grateful for the experience.

Nice one ma'am, thanks for sharing your experience with us

Its been a humbling experience in many ways. It brought home so many lessons for life. Still feeling a little bad that we had to part ways, but happy to see him get another chance at life.
Thanks for stopping by.

Haha you don't have to feel bad about that. I'm sure Pedro might stop by someday again 😂 is that even possible?

Woww... You had a very thrilling three days experience while playing the role of a caregiver to this owl. Your act of love towards Pedro was exactly the thing that made him to take in everything you did in your attempt to find it the exact root of his discomfort.

Come to think of this, I must say that I'm not surprised to see that this bird I didn't attack you in any way. Innocent person attacks anyone that shows their love and the same thing applies to animals.

I'm impressed and I'm wondering the type of camera you used to take this picture. I've always known you to be good at whatever you do. This is a one in a lifetime experience.

Thanks Kene, this was indeed once in a lifetime experience for me. I will cherish this as long as I live.
The fact that this wild bird could trust us even when it hurt was amazing.
I just used my phone camera for this as I didn't want to stress him out more than he had already been subjected to.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing my experience.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful experience with us.

I know that nobody or let's say, only few people hear about rescuing animals in my part of the world. They would rather torment it, make caricature of it, and kill it instead of trying to help.

Hope you understand why I always appreciate how you associate with these creatures. You are showing me a different part of humanity which my environment didn't show me.

Oh that is so sad!
I wish we understood that when God gave us dominion over the creatures of the Earth he expected us to be like him towards them- Caring and protective.
Thank you for sharing this with me.

-Ahw! How sweet and sad too..you became attached with the owl..but he has his kingdom hehehehe but that is true we should value a life..whatever it is..except mosquito maybe hehehe.Giving a chance to live a life it deserves should be done by everyone..each life that exists in this world is God's creation..and to give life is something to be treasured of..great feeling. I admire you and your son for having a good heart..you both did your best to find a vet for the owl. May God bless you Ma'am @Sofs..Have a blessed night!🌷❤

It was a privilege to meet Pedro. There such rare moments in life when you can do something to save a life.
I have been so touched by his trust.
I think he sensed our desire to help and placed his trust in us.
Thanks for stopping by.

I'm also wondering why you weren't pecked while working on the animal.

Where did such trust come from?

Its amazing to see that you care about lives of all kind.

It's ironic to think that the animal, whose life you spared is gonna take so many lives inorder to survive. Lol

Thanks for sharing.

I guess he took his time to trust us. Smart guy he knew our intention was to help.
Yup the circle of life must continue, just as we eat so many living things he also has his place in the ecosystem.
We can survive on plant based food, yet we kill, he cannot live without without taking lives. His is a need ours is a want.
Thanks for stopping by, your comment got me thinking.

We were sad to say bye to our new friend with whom we developed a strong bond

I told you NOT to name him/her. Oh well. You did and sounds like you are proud of you and your sons accomplishments. You should be too. Most people may have given up after seeking help to no avail.

Nice Work you two!!! 🤗😊😇

I was relieved because the bird needed medical attention, we did the first aid but that wasn't enough. Sadly, they tell me that his infection has spread, but he is on antibiotics and the prognosis is 6o:40 on the positive side.
My son and I visited him yesterday but were told not to get attached to him for the birds sake. :(

Damn you! I need to stay away from your page when my VP is dangerously low. I stopped by to show support for your most recent article when I recognized you're a machine.. posting every.single.day. That's impressive.

So I wanted to acknowledge that but then I saw this and now here I am. That was such a good story I almost feel obligated to ring the rescue joint and fact-check your ass.
