Saturday Spotting - Looking for Bald Eagles
I took a little trip down to Starved Rock State Park to look for bald eagles.
Well no sign of an eagle here, just an abandoned nest... I wonder what kind of bird makes their nests so low in the prairie twigs? Maybe a goldfinch?
There is a feeder near the park headquarters that had a bunch of cowbirds and sparrows hanging out under it.
I managed to catch this little pig of a junco feasting on seeds.
They bounce around so quickly its hard to get clear shots of them.
At one of the bluff lookouts you can see down to the Illinois River. There were lots of Canadian Geese out along with some golden eyes and a few mergancers. Sadly my zoom lens isn't quite powerful enough to get closer shots of them.
Finally high up in the gray sky I saw an Eagle flying.
At one of the lookouts I noticed one perching down below in the thick branches.
Then on the trail below the bluffs I saw this guy perching nicely on an evergreen.
Far across the river on an island there were quite a few eagles perched in the snowy trees. Very camouflage.
I found another eagle hiding in the sticks. Sadly no good clear photos of them this time out... womp. At least I found them.
Beautiful shots of mr/mrs Eagle ...🦅
Gotta bring a kayak next time to get to the island on the river where all the birds hang out.
That would be great..maybe a video to..😊👍🦅
Eagle dive bombs and tips kayaker into freezing cold water lol.
What incredible beauties! The eagle is so delicious!
Too bad all the branches obscured them. I need to get a mega zoom lens for better shots of them.
Nice birding area, I have seen one bald eagle this Winter, usually I don't see any...
They probably just flew down here where the rivers aren't frozen over.
Excellent photos! Looks like a great day to be out of the city!
Nice and abandoned out in the countryside. Super cold too.
