Mealtime for Redtail Hawk (late FeatheredFriday post)

Here's a late post for #featheredfriday hosted by @melinda010100
P7048702.jpg
Early Saturday I noticed this young redtail sitting on a dead tree branch by the road on my way to a walking path.
P7048706.jpg
I hopped out of the car with my zoom lens and began snapping shots. Here the bird looks deep in thought focusing on something on the ground.
P7048708.jpg
Now the bird is looking at me considering if I'm a threat or not. Nahh it's just another annoying photographer. Second one this day lol.
P7048695.jpg
I am now on the ground human... You aren't going to bother me are you?!
P7048698.jpg
If you come any closer I will continue glaring at you...
P7048691.jpg
I also will make a fist and punch out your camera lens if you come any closer.
P7048689.jpg
OOMPH now I see what the hawk was after. Yum what a tasty dead possum meal. Hawk is thinking, I have conquered this mighty beast and will now feast upon its entrails.
P7048688.jpg
First I have to check for any other hawks trying to take my treasured meal...
P7048684.jpg
No hawks are around, now its time to dig in yum yum.
P7048710.jpg
Meanwhile the catbird is watching this about to throw up...
P7048713.jpg
Catbird had to yell out "ohhh that is disgusting!".
P7048686.jpg
Hawk looks up from its meal full of rage and says "quiet down catbird before I come over there for dessert".

Eventually I had to take a stick and move the possum to the grassy area on the side of the road to keep the hawk from getting hit by cars driving by. This young red tail hasn't learned yet that highways are dangerous.

We have three Red Tailed Hawks that live and hunt in a canyon behind our garage. I don't think my cellphone camera has the zoom capabilities that these photos show. Still, on a sunnier day like today I might get better pics when the perch close by.

It concerns me as well because our Conure Flew off a week ago. I wonder if she has the skills to survive out there. Yikes!

Doh hopefully the Conure didn't get captured by a hawk. Maybe leave some fruit and treats out for them to see if it comes back? I had a couple love birds escape once leaving treats out made them come back after a couple days. I'm surprised they survived that long. They probably wanted the easier indoor life again lol.

It was a chance encounter, the path I go to nearby has wild monk parakeets living in the electric transformers. I thought I was just going to go there and get some parrot shots but instead found this young redtail feasting on a gross possum lol.

Great story to go with your amazing photos!
I bet you are spot on with the hawks thoughts. Good of you to move the possum carcass out of the roadway.
Thanks for posting to the #featheredfriends

My daughter carries a shovel in the back of her car for just that purpose!

Hmm I better get one just in case too. Much easier than using a couple sticks lol.

Now that is exactly why you never venture outdoors without a camera, what an amazing encounter.

Road kill and red-tail hawk being told off by catbird from perch up above. Many of these larger birds are more scavengers than hunters ironically, need let a good meal go to waste!

What doesn't fatten kills... excuse the pun.

It was pretty tame, I think it was a juvenile hawk.

Our yellow billed kite most probably similar size enjoys retrieving road kill or whatever washes up on beaches, thinking of them they should be making an appearance again soon.

Have an awesome day, lovely photography and sighting!

Now I know why they are sometimes referred to as buzzards.

Appears to be referred to in New World as buzzards, not so much here in Africa.

Terms I am more familiar with Hawks, Kites, Steppe and Jackal Buzzards, Eagles and Vultures. Identifying some are difficult when in regions and on wing...

Man..they are some really cool shots and a great comedy show to go with it i am glad you moved his meal of the highway i was thinking the same thing the hawk might have become a meal for another predator 👍

Thanks, it was pretty gross having to move the dead possum off the highway with just a stick. The hawk got to eat in peace without fear of getting run over after that.

Hopefully the hawk didn't find more roadkill and get hit later on.
