Great Blue Heron

#featheredfriends is hosted by the lovely @melinda010100. Check her post Here for more information.

My feathered friend today is the Great Blue Heron.

There are a couple places by the water I go hoping to see these beautiful birds. Along the banks of the Montague River I was not disappointed.

This heron has an enormous wingspan but when it’s standing the wings are tucked neatly in and you wouldn’t think the wings were huge. When on land or shallow water, the heron walks erect taking long strides.

The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in Canada. They go south to warmer climate in winter but return here each spring to forage in the Atlantic Ocean coastal area and freshwater environments.

The heron looks to be older with a small tear on his body and the larger one on the wing.

The average life of the Great Blue Heron is 15 years.

Information on Wikipedia.

“Not to be confused with the great egret.
The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to coastal Spain, the Azores, and areas of far southern Europe. An all-white population found in south Florida and the Florida Keys is known as the great white heron. Debate exists about whether this represents a white color morph of the great blue heron, a subspecies of it, or an entirely separate species.[2][3] The status of white individuals known to occur elsewhere in the Caribbean, and very rarely elswhere in eastern North America, is unclear.”

Location: Prince Edward Island, Canada

Camera: CanonEOS Rebel T6

All photos are of the same Great Blue Heron.

Wonderful photos of these magnificent birds, Jo! There used to be a heron that would come and stand at the end of our dock and reach down and grabbed a little fish when they swam past. It came every year, and we always wondered if it was the same one, but if they live for 15 years, most likely it was.

Hi Melinda and thanks. The heron is amazing. It probably was the same one coming back each year. The birds seem to return to the same place. Besides the hummingbirds, two grackles come back each year and nest in the same cedar tree.

These are from your last walk on the river I believe - very cool photos, Jo, the photo where this beautiful big bird is walking in the water is great, but the one where you caught it in flight is great 😊

I hope your weather is fine today and you have a nice Sunday 😊

Yes, you have a good memory Johann.😉I took these photos on one of the days I walked the trail by the Montague River. I'm happy you liked seeing the beautiful big heron.

This morning looks overcast but we will see what the day brings. I hope your Sunday is sunny,😊

Well, it has been only a few days since you posted that walk 😉

We have had beautiful sunshine, but now there are some rainclouds on the sky. If it rains I'll have to stay one more night at my parents house 😀 tomorrow is a holiday anyway.

Yes I did say I was going to post photos of the Blue Heron from my walk in Feathered Friends.

A nice long visit. Maybe you get macro shots of the flowers there and some birds will come by.

Have a wonderful Sunday Johann.

I have photographed a few flowers and insects, but I think most birds have been too fast for me ;) I'll have to look at the photos at home.

I hope your weather has become nice and your Sunday also 🙂

The weather is beautiful today. The leaves are out on the trees. It’s nice to see the flowers and bushes blooming.

I’m sure you captured some lovely shots Johann. I look forward to seeing them.

Good morning Jo,

I got up late today and now I try to reply to quite a few comments before I decide what to do today, because our day seems to be very beautiful too.

Yesterday evening I came home and I only have downloaded the photos to the computer, but haven't had a look at them yet. If it rained today I would know what to do, but the sun is shining ... I think I have said that today is a holiday 😁

Hopefully today will be as nice as yesterday and you'll have a great day, Jo 😀

Wonderful choice for your Sunday friend! We have Great Blue Herons as well as some 'white Egrets' that are resident and a large number that gather around here in the winter. I just love watching them.

I love watching them too Tom @bigtom13. The ones here probably fly your way to escape our winters.

Thanks and have a great Sunday!

I love the flying shots. It's hilarious how their legs have to dangle when they fly. I found some heron nests the other day, still have to process the photos though.

They remind me of a ballerina- so graceful and the legs and feet are always prominent.

Look forward to seeing what photos you have of them.

Thanks @sketch.and.jam.

Stunning photography of this large bird in flight, always so exciting to see the larger birds in the wild.

Extremely interesting learning about the colour differentiation between the two birds, possibility of change is always interesting in certain family of birds.

Have a wonderful new week Jo, thanks for sharing this amazing bird.

Wonderful shots redheadpei, well done! We have a couple down here but of course they are here year round and don't have to go to warmer regions in the winter.
