Walking and birds spotting Week 02

Hello friends.

This is week 02 of my weekly walking and birds spotting diary. All photos were taken in the period from January 8 to January 14. For this week I'll share 14 bird species spotted around the place I live. I also managed to get closer to some and get better photos. I covered the area of around 20 squared kilometers and walked more than 100 kilometers.

As usual, I'll start with the most common and most numerous birds.

Sparrows

This week I saw sparrows only in the usual places mostly in larger groups.

Rooks

They are still in large numbers and grouped on trees. But they have become braver and it is easier to see them isolated from the group.

Pigeons

If they do not fly, they are arranged in groups on the roof.

Magpies

By default, they observe the surroundings from the tops of trees. They are still extremely careful and do not allow an approach. I rarely see more than two magpies at the same time.

Collared doves

They are on the transmission line near the transformer almost all day. This is definitely their favorite place.

Hooded crow

I see hooded crows only in the fields, not so often as in the summer when there were plenty of them.

Long-eared owls

Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, the number of owls changes. During windy days, there are fewer of them on deciduous trees. At first, I thought that their number would increase on evergreen trees, but this is not the case because every owl has its own place on the tree. I'm not sure where the other owls are hiding from the wind.

Common buzzard

They spend most of their time observing the environment and only take off when they spot prey. I still fail to get them at the right distance to take a better photo.

Common kestrel

This week I had a lot of luck with the kestrel. First, I managed to take a picture of one taking off, and in a few days, I managed to get as close as possible to a frozen and tired one.

Mostly they don’t let me get close but this poor frozen bird just didn’t have the strength for another flight. She just let me get close and take a picture of her.
Although it was gloomy and cloudy, and without adequate lighting, I am still satisfied with the pictures.

Great gray and white heron

First I managed to photograph a gray heron in flight, and then I saw an interesting scene not far from it. The white and the gray heron fly towards each other and pass each other with almost a touch. It was as if they had thrown 5 at each other or whispered something.

Later, a white heron flew over me.

After a few kilometers, I came across another interesting scene. Another pair of gray and white herons but now together with mallards. They are all together at a distance of several meters in search of food. Of course, my presence disrupted their socializing, and they went to safety.

Goldfinches

One day I noticed a group of goldfinches resting on branches. I rarely see them but I know they are present in the area.

Fieldfares

I took this photo from a distance and I think there are fieldfares on it since there is a source of their favorite winter food nearby, rosehip and blackthorn. This is the first time I have seen them around.

Thanks. But I don't know how much of enjoyment would it be because I walk fast. 🏃😊

Great selection of birds! I see a flock of owls for the first time! They are solitary birds.

Thanks. In the winter they roost together, and It is common to see even 50 birds on a big tree.

That is one epic owl convention, the most I've ever seen together is two.

This is regular owl convention and sometimes there are a few times more on one tree. :)

It seems the long eared owls are more communal than most other owls.

You are probably right. I've seen other owls together mostly in pairs and never in groups.
