Nightingale, Barn Swallow And House Martins

Hello bird lovers,

Let me show you some of my recent photos.

Nightingale

The bird with the most beautiful song. Several times I heard it singing but could not find it among the leaves of the trees. Once I think I got a glimpse. Tried to capture the bird, but the photo wasn't good at all . Recently I saw some movement and a bird with a tail a bit longer than a sparrow. Lucky for me the bird was on a branch on a bright side and did not notice me under the tree. Besides it wasn't on a high branch but under my eye level. The lower branches were reaching the ground and I had to bend in order to get a clear shot.

I did not know ar first what bird it might be untill I downloaded the images and asked my trusted app Google Lens. To my delight it turned out to be a nightingale.

To be sure I put the photos in Birds in Bulgaria fb group and I was right about its id - Common nightingale. What I did not know is that there is another species found in my country - Thrush nightingale. But the common nightingale is the one that has the better voice. Of course, like every time I photograph a new bird I keep on searching for images in internet to make a comparison.

Like many I too was surprised by its rather dull look. Actually I knew that it does not look dashing. Nothing spectacular at first and I am sure it may stay unnoticed. If it wasn't the tail I spot, I would think that there is another sparrow as there were bunch of them. However, I knew that whatever catches my eye I better try and shoot, because that is how I discoved so many new species.

I have recorded a song of what I thought was nightingale. It was couple of years ago and I was not into birdwatching. I heard it approaching the office and a took the phone and made short clip as if I could see it. Now, if i can only find where I have stored this file. 🤔

Barn swallow

Something I was missing to add to my list of birds was the barn swallow. And even better - the one on the wire.

I saw it after I visited the storks 👉Update on the stork family.

Barn swallow arrives in March in our lands and leaves south in September. I read that they can reach as far as Cape Good Hope. Amazing how this little birds can fly such a long distance. What I like about them is that they feed on mosquitoes. Of course not only on that, but it is good to have them to reduce the population of the bloody mosquitoes.

This one did not stay any longer and flew away.

House Martin

I always thought about swallows and house martins that they are speniding their time on wires. It is stuck in my mind since I was a child. But why I haven't seen them so often on wires? Perhaps I did not look carefully. Just thinking about that the other day and I saw the barn swallow and later the house martins and not just one or two but much more all lined up on a wire.

And this is just a fragment of the big picture.

See, this is an old crane in the factory yard, out of use and the long wire is covered with so many house martins. How on earth I did not see that before?

They are not just hanging out, every bird is busy doing something. There are many others flying around, landing on the wire, swapping places. I made quite a lot of clicks and here are some cropped versions of the most interesting birds.

They were pretty noisy. If I had more time (it was my lunch break) I would be staying much longer watching them. It seems to me this gatheting was of adults and their offsprings. Of course I vould be wrong. Anyways it was interesting to see so many house martins at one place.

The birds were there today as well, but something scared them and they all flew from the crane. They were flying to and fro and it was not possible to make a decent photo.

And that is for now, hope you enjoyed viewing my photos.

Happy birding!
