Feathered neighbors

I often mention the little bay in our town when I post about birds. It is not the same as ocean beach, but some birds prefer the calmer and shallower waters.

From time to time I get my zoom lens and go check on the birds. All those you see here I got during one walk. This is still not all of the flying friends that can be spotted there. I often see white herons as well and some smaller birds that run around the sand looking for food. One time I was super lucky to spot a group of Spoonbills. I hope to see those again.

Here are the most common ones that I see each time:

  • Cormorant - they are always hard to catch. Either way will fly like torpedo's, or will dive into the water and appear many meters away.

In the back you can see a lovely Vasco da Gama Bridge bridge (please google it!). It is the longest bridge in EU with 12.3km in length. I haven't had the pleasure to drive on it, but there is an awesome view to it from the plane when taking off from Lisbon airport. Freaking amazing!

  • Grey Heron - few of them can be seen around. They often rest on the small fishing boats sharing the spot with seagulls.

  • ruddy turnstone - colonies of those are fun to watch. One minute you see no birds and then hundreds of them take of right in front of you.
Here just one that I watched for a bit.

Some other time I managed to catch the whole gang :)

  • and lastly the most common Seagull.
    Must I say more? :)

So long since I've done some birdwatching on that area! As soon as the damn lockdown is over, I'll probably drive that way. Cool set of photos!

Cool place ... feels a lot like home. Very similar to the bay in my hometown. Nice bird report.
