Five Feathered Friends!

avatar

Below are five Feathered Friends that I encountered on the Little Gunpowder Trail To Bottom Road in Baltimore County, Maryland. These were all taken on my first visit out to this area of the Gunpowder Falls State Park and two of the captures were nice surprises for me.

First up, I have a Robin that had what looked like a huge worm in it's beak. In taking a closer look, I can't be entirely certain that it is a worm but whatever it is I think it's safe to say that this Robin is not going hungry!

My first surprise capture was a Pileated Woodpecker! Yeah, I know it isn't the best photo of a Pileated Woodpecker or any Woodpecker for that matter but it is the only photo that I've gotten of a live one, so I'm pretty happy about that. I will continue to try to get better photos of them. I can hear them plenty but spotting one and getting a photo of one is a bit more difficult ... for me anyway!

I spotted a Mourning Dove way up in this Lichens laden tree. The Mourning Dove is easier to spot but it was quite far away. I did hear a lot of cooing out on the trail but this one was the only one that I saw and that may be because the tree was pretty bare of foliage.

"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane"....Nope! It's a bird! Two to be exact! It's a wonder I caught them at all because even though it was cloudy with some sun, the glare was still there. My eyes are light blue and extremely sensitive to sunlight and glare so even on a cloudy day I can still be seen wearing sunglasses. Anyway, they were high in the sky and I'm almost certain that they were Vultures.

My last photo and my second surprise sighting and capture was this beautiful Cedar Waxwing! I was happy to get the Pileated Woodpecker but was even happier to see and get a photo of this Cedar Waxwing. I never even realized that Cedar Waxwings resided in the state of Maryland as I've never in my life seen one till now. I think this is the one capture out of the five birds that I'm most fond of!

Those are my five Feathered Friends that I caught on this particular visit but I want to tell you a couple of other things. About a week and a half ago a big package came in the mail. My husband told me explicitly not to open it. Hmmm...odd...since I've never opened any package that was addressed to him unless he asked me to. Can you guess what was in the box? Let me show you!

featheredfriends61820206ok.jpg

He bought a new camera which is a Canon Rebel T7 along with a bunch of accessories. Now, he didn't know it but I had looked at one of these when I was looking for a new /used camera. I bought the Nikon P610 (used) because it was an awesome price and I could afford it. My first thought was how much did all of this cost! He told me what he paid and that he used up a bunch of points for the balance of the cost. He also informed me that he got it for both of us which is cool. I don't believe I've shown any photos from that camera yet and, quite frankly, I can't say for sure which ones he took and which ones I took but whichever. What's mine is his and what's his is mine in our book or photos...lol. I can say that we both took photos of something recently with both cameras and maybe I will show a comparison of them. I like it but I think it will take some getting used to. So I, or should say we, now have the Canon Rebel T7, the Nikon P610, the Sony Still camera that I dunked in the water but is "still" working (I prefer it for close-ups) and our phone cameras. I'm happy also that he is getting interested in photography again. He had a really nice set-up for film before the digitals and phone cameras came out. Let me emphasize though that we are both amateurs in photography so it is a fun activity that we both like!

Btw...I was temporarily unsuccessful in my mission yesterday! I tried and while my endeavor may have failed this time, the mission is still on and I will try once more before calling my mission a total fail! That is all! 😏

Oh nice @deerjay congrats on the new camera !!
You'll like the T-7 it's a great entry level rig that's easy on the budget.
I'm running a T-7 myself right now. If you haven't already, I would head over to Canon USA and register it and then download some free software from cannon. If nothing else get the EOS Utility, it will let you download images via tether/wireless and also allow remote operation of your camera via tether/wireless Canon just click on drivers and downloads.
Digital Photo Professional 4 is a free editing software download from canon that's worth a look too its in the list with the Utility program.
Also you can download Canon connect(from phone app store) to your phone and you operate your camera from your phone. I use my phone as a remote trigger a lot when doing tripod work.
Let me know if you have any questions
Oh one last thing when you use your tether cable to download or operate from your comp it will not work unless you disable the wifi functions on the camera....
Took me hours to find that little tidbit lol
Good Luck @deerjay !!

Thanks so much @chromuimone!! I read this to my husband also. Normally, I just pop out the card in the camera and transfer the photos like that but he is more tech savvy. My brain has been in one heck of a fog lately like even more than usual so it is harder to take info in and extract it sometimes as well..lol. Gotta laugh right?! If I have any questions (and I do..lol) then I will message you on discord. Hope you are doing great and have a terrific weekend! 😊

<,< er Discord ? >,>
I think I have it somewhere on my comp lol haven't used it for years.
I think it's in with the rest of my communications programs......never used it much since I owned several TeamSpeak servers, as well as Mumble,Ventrilo and also ooVoo.
I'll have to dig it up and desktop it. I may have to reinstall it, not sure if it made it to my new laptop after I blew the motherboard in the last one.

A great selection of Feathered Friends! I think you are right about the vultures. I wish you luck on getting a great shot of the pileated woodpecker. I don't have them around too often but when I have seen them I have never been able to get a really good photo.

Congrats on the new camera! It is always so much fun to have something new.

Thanks so much for posting to Feathered Friends! !tip

Thanks so much @melinda010100!! I saw several while on this trail but when we went back a second time I saw none..go figure..lol! We could hear them and my husband has a great eye for spotting them but no luck on the second visit. It is a nice little trail so I'm sure we will go back but maybe not for a while since the heat and humidity has picked up here. 🙂

It is hot as blazes here, too. I don't cope well with the heat, so I'm stuck indoors. My house is well shaded and so far has stayed nice and cool without air-conditioning., so that's a bonus to living in the woods!

Thanks Neli!! I'm glad we went when we did and caught those birds cause our next trip out we only caught a couple. One was a nice one though and I'm saving that one for a post. The new camera was a nice surprise. I'm looking forward to using it more too. 😉 💕

Good shots!A lot of interesting birds. It is funny to see how close relatives of Eurasian birds live in another country, another continent.
Congratulations with your new camera!

Thanks @ratel!! I was so happy to hear and see the Woodpeckers cause so many times they fly off before I can get any kind of photo or I can't locate them from their pecking. 🙂

I like your beautiful Robin - it looks so different from ours and it seems to be much bigger than our little Robin.
This Woodpecker looks like a he has a red mohawk 😉
I had to google the Cedar Waxwing, what a beautiful bird :)

Congratulations to your new camera - I wish you much fun with it.

Don't say your mission was a fail, because if you like photographing and if you had fun it can never be a fail, because the fun is the most important thing, and if the images turn out nice it is even more fun 😊

Thank you so much @johannpiber!! Ooo..I looked up your Robin and it is really pretty! Lol..yes, it does look like a mohawk that the Woodpecker is sporting! 😂
Thank you for those encouraging words. It didn't fully involve taking photos but it may turn out that way. It was a silly venture and, as you may know, I do favor a bit of silliness! 😉 😎 💕

There's a little robin in my parent's garden which had a lot of fun landing for a few seconds until I had my camera ready and then fly away before I could focus correct, but I think both of us had fun playing that game 😉

A little silliness is better than sadness - I have to remember these words for the letter "S" ;)
You are very welcome, @deerjay, have a nice Sunday afternoon 🙂

All lovely captures Dee. Nice to see the cedar waxwings and pileated woodpecker. I’haven’t seen the waxwings here yet this spring but they must be around.

Have fun with the new camera. 💞

Thank you very much Jo!! We went out a second time to this spot in hopes of seeing the Woodpeckers again but we only heard them and didn't see any. I would think that they are there Jo. I have the hardest time spotting the birds when they are in the trees and then my camera will not focus past the branches which is probably in part due to the operator..lol. 😉 💕
