Some Feathered Friends for Your Friday

(Edited)

Welcome everyone, it's a Feathered Friends Friday Today

Ah the weather has been good this week and I've been able to get out and get to know my new lens =)

IMG_0468 (2).jpg

I must say it hasn't disappointed so far.

IMG_0289 (2).jpg

All the images in this post taken handheld with this lens on a Canon EOS Rebel T7( soon to be replaced w/ 7D Mk II)

I started off on the 2nd story deck at a friend's house. We set out seed for the birds all year so we get a steady stream of Sparrows.
IMG_0339 (3).jpg

Oh here we have the Grand Poobah himself. This little guy seems to be the leader among the local Sparrows.
no one gets to eat the seeds till he has had his fill.
IMG_0352 (3).jpg

Well no one except Mrs. Grand Poobah O.o
IMG_0341 (3).jpg

She can eat as she pleases wile the Grand Poobah fusses with and chases off the others. He won't even let them wait around the edges wile she is around. You should hear him talk @#$% to the others at these times. lol

My tweety bird watching came to an abrupt end though as the neighbor's cat came sneaking up along the railing... =/

IMG_0309 (3).jpg

Oh, just a note. Kitty's eyes were done in editing, they don't actually look like that o.o

A couple days later I went out to the bay to try my hand at shore birds and get some action shots and of course to visit the tree where the Night Herons roost.
The fallowing are some of the better shots over 2 days. some at sunrise and the others at sunset.
IMG_0390 (3).jpg

IMG_0395 (3).jpg

This is a Great Blue Heron, you can find these around Humboldt Bay year round.
This was the only one out wile I was here and it was at a bad angle for light and glare but it's a cool bird so I included it.
IMG_0397 (3).jpg

IMG_0445 (3).jpg

These are the Night Herons, some of my favorites. They can be found here all year long as well.
IMG_0865 (3).jpg

These are Black Crowned/Capped Night Herons. They will roost till the sun sets then go out hunting at night.
IMG_0905 (3).jpg

IMG_0972 (3).jpg

IMG_0923 (3).jpg

Not sure what type of Night Heron this is but it's not seen nearly as mush as the others.
IMG_0958 (3).jpg

IMG_0944 (3).jpg

IMG_0648 (2).jpg

Not sure about the ID on these birds. The fly out of the shallows just after sunrise to hunt.
They also move fast, the group of 4 here are moving around 35 - 40 MPH with fast flapping wings, difficult to keep in frame wile panning that fast
IMG_0551 (3).jpg

IMG_0552 (3).jpg

IMG_0578 (3).jpg

Lastly I have a Western Osprey, this one was kinda far out and I had a little trouble finding it lol
These are also yearlong residents of the Bay
IMG_0587 (3).jpg

Well.... I should break it off here before this post gets too big.
There are hundreds of bird species that live here on the bay and many hundreds more that stop over in spring and fall as we are on a major migration rout. Right now there are 1000 s of Geese flying through.
Going to try to drive up to the Northern end of the Bay this next week and visit the Arcata Marsh, a jewel on Humboldt Bay and a major bird sanctuary.
Till next time =)

Wow that lens is great! Your photos are fantastic. Where do you live that you also get slate-colored juncos along with the Oregon ones? And also those gulls, are they greater black-backed gulls? I am not very good at gull ID even between the couple common ones we have here in CA, but those look very different than ours with their dark backs!

Hello @passerine thanks for stopping by.
Just a note, I'm not very good at ID at all, I know a little but think of me as the "special" kid in the corner playing with a blue crayon when it comes to bird identification.
Any how, I live on Humboldt Bay in Eureka CA., only a couple hours to the Oregon border.
There are like 5 or more different types of Sparrows here the ones pictured live close by the house and are daily visitors other types roll in but get chased off by the "locals" who tend to protect the valuable food supply.

Oh wow! I'm in the South SF Bay! I had no idea that there were slate-colored juncos in California, and it makes sense that any would be further north from me. I still consider myself a novice birder, so I am always trying to learn and these kind of steemit posts help me learn something new each time :)

Amazing photos and the birds in flight are awesome! I can see why you like the night herons so much because they are beautiful. Have fun with the new lens! : )
