Friday Files: Soup and Bread, oh and Olives

It was light kitchen duties yesterday. Before I get to them, I need to go back a week.



These are olives from our neighbour's tree. A gift. I have started the long process to cure them. Periodic updates will precede the final reveal. Probably a year or more from now.



At this point, it's all about rinse and repeat. And hurry up and wait.



Nobody wanted to get up: it was grey and miserable and cold.

In the kitchen, it was all about soup and bread. Sourdough rolls, as usual.



The healthy gingered carrot soup is based on a recipe from local and now international celebrity chef, Jenny Morris. About 20 years ago, she sent out an email newsletter. I used to trawl it, copy/type up and save the recipes that spoke to me. This is one. It is now a favourite and often hit the spot in our Sunday Supper menu. The only real adjustment I have made is to substitute the butter with canola or olive oil. Not only does this make it vegan, but in summer, this soup is as good cold as it is hot.

So, it's rolls and a healthy soup for the market.

What escaped the camera was lunch: more comfort food. Tattie scones which, hot with butter, are the ultimate childhood memory of my Scottish dad.



The final bread was a batch of flatbreads. Some for supper to go with the remains of Monday's vegetables on a bed of hummus.

If there was any tree that I want more than any other, it might be an olive tree! I love olives of all sorts and I was actually shocked to hear that it takes a year to cure them?

Really? I am stunned.

Who doesn't love the sweet cuteness of a kitty? Honestly, truly sweet. The gingered carrot soup looks absolutely yummy. We need more people that are all about the food. It looks so darned delicious and I will be honest. I have never, never had carrot soup. Now I really feel like a country bumpkin. A little sour bread and a touch of wine and I will call it golden. Superb and your delivery of the goods is fabulous!! We love you at our #MarketFriday! These olives are destined to go to the farmer's market. You cannot possibly get any more #MarketFriday than that!

I am so happy to see you posting in the #MarketFriday tag. It has been a constant challenge I am sure to come up with new material with so many businesses closed down and the fact that many people do not want to go into some of the crowded stores and Markets. In these times when COVID has made it challenging to put together a post, or even search out different locations, I can say with an optimistic attitude that #MarketFriday has survived the pandemic, thanks to all of you. Without your dedication to stretch what we call a market has been done successfully. Thank you! All of you! In doing so, we have discovered that we have added new dimension to the tag. As many have been staying closer to home, I have also discovered more and more about each of you and that has been pretty nice. I have to admit, with the platform broken into different communities and tags, we get to see the same people, more or less that join every week, so we get to know each other a little bit. The challenge points out our differences, but, then, it also shows many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. We embrace each other as humans.

Ah, Denise! I am so not sure about these communities - for all the reasons you say. I am glad I managed to tag this properly! lol.

That said, I'm not online as much as I'd like - have to earn a living...find a job...anyhow, I'm hoping that's beginning to sort itself out.

On the olive thing - the length of time and mission (pardon the pun) was what had put me off before. And the lack of supply. But, not being one to shy away from a challenge or to look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, I decided, why not...?

I'm using the process outlined here and am going to let the process take care of itself. A friend of ours who has olives set hers to brine and forgot about them for a year. They were. Absolutely. The. Best. So, I'm going to be patient and perhaps persuade The Husband that we need an olive grove. Or happily accept more olive gifts... Imagine never running out?

The ginger and carrot soup was a surprise and it really works well with either a dollop of yogurt or some cheddar cheese and fresh cilantro... Then, with the rolls and a light chardonnay or semillon....

It's fine, Fiona! It meets all the criteria (in reverse, but, who is being picky now!) You have to purchase all the items to make it so that you can eventually seel it. It works for me and it is a nice addition to the mix of different things. I love it.

I still work - nights, so it works for me. I never stopped working through the pandemic, and can only hope that our economy will pick up soon. It is a dismal process of recovery.

Those olives look so beautiful, all black and shiny, lucky gal! It's a tad colder here so we're loving it, but surely not as cold as down your way. no wonder the kitty cats are enjoying their snuggles and snooze!
