Hive Open Mic week 63, Romeo and Juliet

I have to admit, it wasn't easy for me to come up with music to perform for this week's theme, storyteller. Although many songs beautifully represent the theme, they don't sound well on the piano without the lyrics. I had one idea, Hijo de la luna, a song by the Spanish band Mecano, as it sounds very well for the piano solo and it has a great story behind it. However, that song appeared on stage twice this week already. So I was searching for other music.

When I was a small child, I loved listening to the stories my great-grandmother was was tellingelling me from her childhood and childhood and life. It was interesting to listen to the adventures she had with her siblings and family, and life in general many, many years ago. On the other hand, I didn't really like the fairy tales from the books. They didn’t appeal to me and they were also a bit scary. I was more interested in those real-life stories told by the family. But as we were growing up, we read more and more interesting books, and in one one year we had as a homework from the school to read the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. At the time, we thought it was just one in a series of love stories. A bit unreal and exaggerated story at first sight.

IMG_20210625_170951.jpg

However, it is based on a real-life story, that dates back to the beginning of the 14th century of two lovers who lived in Italy, in the town of Verona. Wiliam Shakespeare found this story in a poem wrote by Arthur Brooke and adapted it. This tragedy became a masterpiece and inspired others to make music based on it. For example, Prokofiev wrote the music for the ballet Romeo and Juliet. Nino Rota wrote the soundtrack for the same-named movie in 1969 and this is the piece I have chosenn to play. I interpret the song Love theme from Romeo and Juliet, in the arrangement of Henry Mancini.

I have visited Verona in Italy and the famous balcony of Juliet that is used as a touristic spot now. There is also a statue of her, and I had photos from the place but as it was long time ago, they are old and bad quility. Hence the cover photo is from pixabay but represents that balcony of Jullie I have visited in my school dayst I have visited in my school days.

Hello ,@mipiano, nice to greet you, and thank you for giving us your wonderful performances every week, like this excellent song, which I have loved. After reading your text, I began to remember my grandfather, when he told me his comics. Greetings, God bless you.

Our grandparents surely had many stories to tell us. I had that luck that even my great-grandmother was telling me the stories! I am glad you liked the music I played and appreciate your listening and comment! Greetings to you too :)

Thank you for joining in and enjoying Hive Open Mic

Oh yes, what a good idea to play a song that is composed specifically for a story we all know. This song has a Romeo and Juliet feeling to it - elegant, innocent, adventurous, epic, and tragic. You play it beautifully. In fact, the Romeo and Juliet story has been on my mind a lot recently, because of some music that appeared in the 1996 film, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Do you remember the fish tank scene? Ah, so beautiful.

Hm, I watched this movie too, yes. Although this tune is from a movie that is made back in time, the story is always actual. There are many versions and I would not be surprised if a new one will be made in some future. :)

Weehoo! I know this song. Didn't realise this was a Mancini composition for the Hollywood production about the story of all stories. Nice :)

ps Your piano seems to be a bit restless: Moving itself through your room and apartment constantly :)

Story of all stories :D Seems that Shakespeare knew how to write a masterpiece and musicians to compose music upon that story. I will have to prepare one day some movement from the ballet Romeo and Juliet that Prokofiev wrote! 💚 that one is beautiful too!

My poor piano is restless, yes. I am still trying to find a good angle and good light. I think the best light is in the living room, I was thinking aloud and discussed that idea with me but the family heard it and reacted with a : nooooooo, not again moving it 🤣

Sometimes I wonder: If Shakespeare would've lived today and wrote his books today, would his stories become these classics?
Your family have a lot to handle with you living with them 🤣🤣🤣

Let me know, how much did my husband pay you to write this? ... Ow, that it was not agreed? ... Ok, it can be seen how hard life they have with me...
